Crucial differences between PRINCE2 2017 and 2009 Manual

Over the years, the project management world has evolved a fair bit ensuring that the learning and development industry is supporting a new set of developments and assessments in PRINCE2. The revised version of PRINCE2 affirms the methodology’s established approach to project management, with its overall structure of seven principles, themes, and processes. PRINCE2 2017 has a stronger emphasis on scalability and flexibility. PRINCE2 has always been tailorable to the complexity and requirements of a project.

Below are the main changes that are emphasized on the revised edition of PRINCE2 guide.

  1. Tailoring PRINCE2 to the needs of organizations and project environments

  2. The principles that strengthen PRINCE2

  3. Clarifying the link between the themes and principles

  4. The restructuring of the ‘Themes’ guidance to accommodate specific examples of tailoring

  5. Maintaining your certification through My PRINCE2

  6. Emphasis on the core principles of PRINCE2 – the minimum required for a PRINCE2 project, even when using a selective, scaled-down version

  7. The themes are more readable and support new material on tailoring projects

  8. Better clarity on how these principles and themes are linked

  9. Examples, hints, and tips on how to apply this new guidance

Always grounded with real-life experience, the revised version of PRINCE2 is a combination of knowledge that is gained in the workplace. PRINCE2 is trusted to provide practical, authoritative, and relevant guidance to anyone managing a project in today’s environment.

The PRINCE2 2017 guide in other languages

Post the release of the revised edition of PRINCE2 2017, the planned languages to be rolled out for Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 are Dutch, German, Polish, French, Danish, Norwegian and Italian.

How does it affect exams?

Along with the update of PRINCE2, the Foundation exam has also been streamlined. Fundamentals that are not emphasized such as configuration management have been expelled. Meanwhile, this exam now has assessment criteria around tailoring. With the reduction in the number of questions from 75 to 60, the exam design has additionally been enhanced, with less negative and list questions.

While the Practitioner exam has a renewed focus on practical skills, the 2017 updated exam now tests candidates on all parts of the PRINCE2 method, with fewer questions on things like management products. The exam is far better designed, with less ‘additional information’ needed, removing assertion reason and multiple response questions. The total number of marks has been reduced from 80 to 75.

Since the beginning of 2018, PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner exams will be based on PRINCE2 2017.

How does it affect current certificates?

The latest updates shall not invalidate the previously earned certificates. As the Practitioner certification validity status is for five years, it will need to be renewed before then to remain valid.

As a PRINCE2 practitioner, if you earned or re-registered your Practitioner status in 2016, before the update, it will still be valid until 2021.

Due to the latest updates, making a PRINCE2 project agile and versatile is easier. Be a PRINCE2 certified practitioner by choosing the best practice approach to manage projects, while still tailoring them to your environment.

Receiving applauds for the core principles of PRINCE2, it responds to the demands of today’s dynamic project management environment. There’s now a greater need for versatility and agility. Project managers need to respond to the latest technological innovation and also work to fulfill the expectations of the stakeholders and customers. The PRINCE2 2017 update has a stronger emphasis on tailoring the methodology to the necessities of the venture that reflects seen in project management becoming a business-wide discipline.
