    Is Lean manufacturing worth learning in 2026?

    What is the Toyota Production System?

    The Toyota Production System (TPS) is the foundation of Lean manufacturing, developed at Toyota by Taiichi Ohno and Shigeo Shingo. Its two pillars are Just-in-Time production and Jidoka, or built-in quality, and it is the source of the tools taught in this course.

    Do I need prior Lean experience to join?

    No. The training introduces Lean principles and tools from first principles, so no prior Lean knowledge is required. Some manufacturing or production experience is helpful, but the course is designed to bring everyone to a common, practical level.

    Is there a test to pass in this Lean course?

    No. This is a practical skills training course with no formal test to pass. Learning is reinforced through hands-on Lean tool exercises, waste identification activities, manufacturing case studies and team discussion throughout the day.

    Do I receive anything after completing the training?

    Yes. On completing the one-day programme you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. It recognises that you have completed practical Lean manufacturing training and built the tools to apply on the shop floor.

    How is learning reinforced during the course?

    Learning is applied, not tested. Participants run a Gemba waste walk, collect value stream data, assess a workplace against 5S, calculate OEE and size a Kanban loop, so every tool is practised on realistic production scenarios during the session.

    How long is the Lean manufacturing training?

    The programme runs for one day, eight hours in total, and can also be delivered as two half-day sessions. It covers the full Lean toolkit from TPS foundations and the eight wastes through value stream mapping, 5S, pull systems, TPM, OEE and Kaizen.

    Are there prerequisites to join?

    None. There are no formal prerequisites and the course is open to all production, engineering, quality and improvement professionals regardless of prior Lean experience.

    Course Content

    What topics does the Lean manufacturing course cover?

    The course covers the five Lean principles and TPS, the eight wastes (DOWNTIME), value stream mapping, 5S and visual management, pull systems and Kanban, Just-in-Time, TPM and OEE, standard work, SMED, Heijunka, Poka Yoke and building a Kaizen culture.

    What Lean tools will I learn to use?

    You learn to run a waste walk, draw a value stream map, apply 5S, design a Kanban pull system, calculate OEE, document standard work, reduce changeover with SMED and lead Kaizen and A3 problem solving. Each tool is practised during the training.

    What is the DOWNTIME model of waste?

    DOWNTIME is a memory aid for the eight wastes of Lean: Defects, Overproduction, Waiting, Non-utilised talent, Transportation, Inventory, Motion and Extra processing. The course teaches you to spot and quantify each type in a real production area.

    Are there hands-on exercises in the training?

    Yes. The course is built around hands-on activities, including a Gemba waste walk, value stream data collection, a 5S workplace assessment, an OEE calculation and a Kanban sizing exercise, so you leave able to apply the tools at work.

    Is the course relevant beyond manufacturing?

    Yes. While the focus is manufacturing, the principles and many tools, such as 5S, Kaizen, value stream mapping and waste elimination, apply to logistics, healthcare operations and other service and production environments.
