    How long is the CSM valid and how do I renew it?

    The CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle. SEUs can be earned through courses, events, coaching and self-study.

    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes. It is open book and taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you finish an approved course, with no proctor required.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. The training includes practice questions aligned to this format to help you prepare.

    What happens if I do not pass on the first attempt?

    You typically have up to three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing the course. Our trainer guidance and practice materials are designed to help you pass on the first attempt.

    Do I have to attend a course before the exam?

    Yes. Scrum Alliance requires you to complete an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer before the exam is unlocked. Self-study alone does not qualify you to sit the CSM exam.

    Which Scrum Guide edition is the exam based on?

    The CSM exam is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. The course covers this edition in full.

    What topics does the CSM course cover?

    The course covers six areas from the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artifacts and the Scrum Master role.

    Do I need prior experience to take the CSM course?

    No. The CSM is designed for beginners as well as experienced practitioners, and there are no formal prerequisites. The trainer builds concepts from the ground up, so you can join even if you are new to Scrum.

    Is the course aligned to the latest Scrum Guide?

    Yes. The courseware is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide (November 2020), so you learn Scrum exactly as it is defined and tested today.

    What materials and practice are included?

    You receive Scrum Alliance-aligned courseware, industry case studies covering facilitation and impediment removal, and practice questions mapped to the 50-question exam format to build your readiness.

    How long is the CSM training?

    The CSM training is a 16-hour programme, delivered as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. It exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hour requirement for an approved CSM course.
