What is the House of Quality?

The House of Quality is the central QFD planning matrix. Do I need prior experience to take this course?

No. The course has no prerequisites and introduces QFD and the House of Quality from first principles. Familiarity with product development or quality management is helpful but not required, so beginners and experienced professionals both benefit.

Where did QFD come from?

QFD was developed in Japan in the late 1960s and early 1970s by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno, with the first formal application at Mitsubishi's Kobe Shipyard. It spread through the automotive industry and is now used across manufacturing, healthcare, software and services worldwide.

Assessment

Is there an exam for this course?

No. This is a non-certification skills course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on House of Quality construction exercises, case studies and team discussion, and you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning.

How is my learning assessed during the course?

Assessment is practical, not formal. You build and interpret QFD matrices through guided exercises across the day, applying each concept as you learn it. By the end you can construct a full House of Quality and calculate engineering priorities.

Will I receive anything on completion?

Yes. On completing the one-day programme you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning that recognises your participation and the QFD skills you built. There is no external credential, as this is a practical skills course.

What will I be able to do after the training?

You will be able to capture and structure the Voice of the Customer, build a complete House of Quality, calculate technical priorities, resolve design conflicts, and cascade QFD through parts, process and production planning, including within Design for Six Sigma projects.

Does the training map to Design for Six Sigma?

Yes. QFD is a core tool in the Design for Six Sigma (DMADV) Measure phase and in the DMAIC Define phase, where it translates the Voice of the Customer into critical-to-quality characteristics. The course covers these applications directly.

Course Content

What topics does the QFD course cover?

The programme covers QFD foundations and the business case, Voice of the Customer capture, full House of Quality construction across its six rooms, interpreting the matrix, four-phase QFD cascading, and applying QFD in Design for Six Sigma, DMAIC and service design.

How long is the QFD training?

The course is delivered as a one-day, eight-hour programme. It can also run as two extended half-day sessions. Hands-on House of Quality exercises run throughout so you practise the method as you learn it.

Are the House of Quality exercises hands-on?

Yes. You build a House of Quality from a realistic product or service scenario, including customer requirements, engineering characteristics, the relationship matrix, the correlation roof, benchmarking and engineering targets. In corporate sessions you can use one of your own products.

Does the course apply to services as well as products?

Yes. While QFD began in manufacturing, the course covers service, healthcare, financial services and software applications. The House of Quality works anywhere customer requirements must become design or delivery specifications.

What materials will I receive?

You receive structured courseware covering all six QFD modules, House of Quality templates, worked examples and case studies. These support you during the training and act as reference tools when you apply QFD back at work.
