Which body awards the CSM certification?

The CSM is awarded by Scrum Alliance, the certifying body behind the world's most widely recognised Scrum Master credential, with over one million CSM certificates issued globally across all industries.

How long is the CSM certification valid?

The CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) within each two-year cycle and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee. SEUs can be earned through training, conferences, coaching and self-study.

Do I need prior experience to take the CSM?

No. There is no formal work experience or education requirement, so the CSM is suitable for beginners as well as those formalising existing Scrum knowledge. Attendance at an approved CSM course led by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory before the exam.

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice examination taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. No proctor is required.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes (one hour). It is taken online after you complete the course.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

The passing score is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Because the exam is open book, focused preparation across all six topic areas is the best approach.

What happens if I do not pass the CSM exam?

You typically have up to three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing your course. Our trainers provide preparation guidance to help you pass on your first attempt. Verify the current attempt policy on scrumalliance.org.

What is the CSM exam based on?

The exam is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives, aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. It covers Scrum theory, values, the team, events, artefacts and the Scrum Master role.

Course Content

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers six areas from the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artefacts, and the Scrum Master role.

How long is the CSM training programme?

The CSM programme runs for 16 hours of instructor-led training, delivered as two full days or four half-days. This exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact hours required for the course.

Can a complete beginner take the CSM course?

Yes. The CSM is a foundational certification with no prerequisites, so beginners are welcome. The training is structured to build your understanding of Scrum from first principles through to practical facilitation.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest Scrum Guide?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide, the 2020 edition, which introduced the Product Goal and the commitments for each Scrum artefact.
