    Your South Africa Career Transformation

Your Career Before and After PMI-RMP

    The Shift Certification Delivers

South Africa's project and risk market is expanding with infrastructure investment, energy reform and tighter governance, and employers increasingly separate certified risk specialists from the rest. Here is which side of that line you want to be on.

How to Get PMI-RMP Certified in South AfricaStep-by-Step Certification Process

The PMI-RMP certification path in South Africa is a pure exam track: once your PMI application is approved, you proceed directly to the 115-question, 150-minute exam administered through Pearson VUE , no peer-panel review is required. From initial training to exam day typically takes 6-10 weeks, including application processing.

    Step 1: Confirm PMI-RMP Eligibility

Verify you meet one of the three eligibility sets. Set A: high school or secondary school diploma (or global equivalent) + 36 months / 3 years of project risk management experience within the last 5 years + 40 hours of project risk management education. Set B: bachelor's degree or higher (or global equivalent) + 24 months / 2 years of project risk management experience within the last 5 years + 30 hours of project risk management education. Set C: bachelor's degree or higher from a GAC-accredited program + 12 months / 1 year of project risk management experience within the past 5 years + 30 hours of project risk management education. Education hours must be in project risk management topics specifically.

Step 2: Enroll in a Learning Program

Choose a learning format that aligns with your schedule and goals, such as a PMI-RMP bootcamp, live virtual sessions, self-paced learning, or corporate group training. Enrollment provides access to PMI-aligned courseware, practice assessments, and expert-led guidance.

Step 3: Register on the PMI Candidate Portal

Create or sign in to your PMI account at pmi.org. PMI membership (~$139/year) is optional but reduces the PMI-RMP exam fee from ~$670 to ~$520 and gives access to the PMI Risk Management Practice Guide and the PMI Standard for Risk Management.

Step 4: Submit the PMI-RMP Application to PMI

Submit your application via the PMI candidate portal: document your project risk management experience, list your 30 or 40 contact hours, and pay the application/exam fee (~$520 PMI member or ~$670 non-member). PMI typically processes applications within 5-10 business days. Unlike PfMP, no peer-panel review is required.

Step 5: Sit the 115-Question PMI-RMP Exam via Pearson VUE

Once approved, you receive a one-year exam eligibility window. Book your PMI-RMP exam through Pearson VUE , online proctored from your home or office in South Africa, or at a Pearson VUE test centre. The exam is 115 multiple-choice and scenario questions over 150 minutes, covering all five risk management domains.

Step 6: Earn the PMI-RMP Credential and Plan CCR Renewal

On passing, PMI issues your PMI-RMP digital badge and certificate. The credential is valid for three years; renew via PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) programme by earning 30 PDUs in risk-relevant content across the 3-year cycle.

The Risk Skills You Will MasterAcross All Five PMI-RMP Domains

This section answers what you will learn in the PMI-RMP programme: the practical risk capabilities behind the credential. By the end, you can identify, analyse, respond to and monitor project risk with confidence across the five risk domains.

    Set Risk Strategy and Planning

You will learn to establish the risk management approach, framework and governance for a project, confirming risk thresholds and tailoring the risk plan to predictive, agile or hybrid delivery. This is the first of the five PMI-RMP domains and shapes how risk is led end to end.

    Identify Threats and Opportunities

Facilitate structured risk identification using brainstorming, Delphi, SWOT, checklists and assumption analysis, then document risks clearly in the risk register with owners and categories so nothing material is missed.

    Analyse Risk Qualitatively and Quantitatively

Apply the probability and impact matrix to prioritise risks, and use quantitative tools such as Monte Carlo simulation, decision trees, sensitivity analysis and expected monetary value to model their aggregate effect on cost and schedule.

    Plan and Implement Risk Responses

Develop response strategies for threats and opportunities, from avoid, transfer and mitigate to exploit, share and enhance, then implement them with owners, triggers, contingency plans and reserves built into the project plan.

    Monitor and Close Risks

Track identified, residual and secondary risks against triggers, run periodic risk reviews, report on risk exposure to stakeholders and formally close risks, capturing lessons learned for future projects.

Manage Risk in Agile and Hybrid Delivery

Apply the updated Examination Content Outline scope to manage risk across predictive, agile and hybrid environments, reflecting how modern projects in banking, technology and infrastructure actually run.

Yes. The PMI-RMP is a globally recognised specialist credential that sets you apart in a market where certified risk talent is scarce. In South Africa, risk manager roles average around R1.07m a year, with head of risk and chief risk officer bands reaching far higher, and employers in banking, mining and infrastructure actively seek the qualification.

What is the PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)?

The PMI-RMP is PMI's specialist credential in project risk management. It recognises expertise in identifying and assessing project risks, mitigating threats and capitalising on opportunities, and it sets risk specialists apart from general project management practitioners.

Who should take the PMI-RMP certification?

No. The PMP is not a prerequisite for the PMI-RMP. You can apply directly based on your risk management experience and education, though many holders carry both credentials because they complement each other well.

How long is the PMI-RMP certification valid?

The PMI-RMP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 30 PDUs in risk management topics within each three-year cycle through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) system.

    Pricing

What is included in the PMI-RMP training fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, 32 contact hours of instruction, practice questions and mock exams aligned to the 115-question format, application guidance and learner support. The PMI exam fee is billed separately by PMI. Request a quote for current South Africa pricing.

Do you offer group or corporate discounts?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for risk functions, PMOs and delivery teams. Ask about corporate and group pricing for a tailored quote.

    What payment options are available?

    Course Content

What will I learn in the PMI-RMP training?

You will learn to lead risk across the five domains: setting risk strategy, identifying threats and opportunities, analysing risk qualitatively and quantitatively, planning and implementing responses, and monitoring and closing risks, across predictive, agile and hybrid delivery.

Which standard and edition is the course based on?

The programme is aligned to the current PMI-RMP Examination Content Outline, effective January 2022, and to PMI's Practice Standard for Project Risk Management and the PMBOK Guide. It reflects both predictive and agile or hybrid risk approaches.

Can a beginner to risk management take this course?

The training itself is open to anyone building risk skills, and it delivers structured, hands-on practice. To sit the exam, though, PMI requires dedicated project risk management experience, so check the eligibility sets before you apply.
