Why Observability Skills Are in Demand in Ireland

Cloud Outages Are the New Normal

Global outages now run into the hundreds each week, and 2026 reports show failures increasingly come from interactions between systems, making end-to-end observability the priority for reliability teams.

    OBSF builds end-to-end observability skills

Ireland Is a European Cloud Hub

As the EMEA base for Google, Meta, Microsoft and AWS, and home to Europe's densest data-centre cluster, Ireland runs services at a scale where deep observability is essential to stay reliable.

    OBSF suits large-scale, always-on systems

    Financial Resilience Rules Bite

Digital operational resilience expectations push Irish banks and fintechs to prove they can detect and explain incidents fast, a demand that strong observability practice directly answers.

    OBSF supports operational resilience goals

    Monitoring No Longer Explains Failures

Traditional dashboards flag that something broke, but distributed systems need metrics, logs and traces together to reveal why, which is exactly what the Observability Foundation programme teaches.

OBSF teaches the three pillars together

    Observability Skills Are Scarce

Employers want engineers fluent in Prometheus, Grafana and OpenTelemetry, yet this skill set stays in short supply across Dublin, Cork and Limerick technology teams.

OBSF makes certified engineers stand out

    Telemetry Costs Need Control

High-cardinality data is expensive at scale, so teams need people who can design sampling and telemetry pipelines that keep observability affordable without losing insight.

    OBSF covers pipelines and sampling

Observability Foundation is more than a certificate. It is a fast route into Ireland's reliability, SRE and platform roles. Build the skills employers are hiring for and start today.

    Observability Foundation

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Observability Foundation (OBSF) is a vendor-neutral DevOps Institute credential that validates a foundational understanding of the concepts, practices and tools needed to implement observability in modern IT systems. It covers the three pillars of metrics, logs and traces, plus SLIs, SLOs, tooling and organisational practice.

Yes. Observability skills are in strong demand across Ireland's cloud, SaaS and fintech employers, and the credential maps to well-paid roles such as SRE, platform engineer and cloud engineer, where salaries often range from around €72,000 to €125,000. It is a practical step into reliability engineering.

It suits DevOps and platform engineers, site reliability engineers, developers, IT operations staff and technical managers who want to formalise their observability knowledge. It is equally valuable for anyone moving from traditional monitoring into modern, distributed-systems reliability.

No. Observability Foundation has no formal prerequisites and is open to all. Familiarity with DevOps concepts or IT operations is helpful but not required, so beginners in the field can take the training and sit the exam.

The certification is offered by the DevOps Institute, a global professional membership body, with exams delivered in partnership with PeopleCert. The credential is recognised internationally as a vendor-neutral standard for observability practice.

Observability Foundation is valid for three years. To keep it current, you renew by earning the required Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through DevOps Institute membership and continuing education activities within each three-year cycle.

    Pricing

How much does Observability Foundation training cost in Ireland?

Pricing depends on your chosen format, live virtual, onsite or corporate group training, so the exact fee is available on request. Contact a learning advisor for a current quote and any batch offers, and ask about group pricing if you are training a team.

What is included in the course fee?

    Exam

What is the format of the Observability Foundation exam?

The OBSF exam is an open-book, single-answer multiple-choice examination based on the current Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint. It tests foundational understanding of observability concepts, the three pillars, tooling, SLIs, SLOs and organisational practice.

How many questions are on the exam and how long is it?

The exam has 40 questions and you have 60 minutes (one hour) to complete it. It is open book with single-answer multiple-choice questions, so time management and knowing where to find answers both help.

What is the passing score for the OBSF exam?

The passing score is 65%, which means answering at least 26 of the 40 questions correctly. Focus on broad comprehension across the Body of Knowledge rather than memorising any single topic area.

How and where is the exam delivered?

The exam is delivered online with remote proctoring through PeopleCert OnVUE, or at an authorised test centre. You can sit it from home or the office in Ireland once you are ready, subject to the DevOps Institute voucher terms.

What if I do not pass the first time?

You can re-sit the Observability Foundation exam under the DevOps Institute re-sit policy. Our trainers provide first-attempt guidance and mock exams to help you pass on the first go; verify current re-sit terms and fees with your advisor.

Which standard is the exam based on?

The exam is based on the current Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint (Body of Knowledge) published by the DevOps Institute. Our courseware is aligned to that blueprint, so what you learn maps directly to what the exam tests.

    Course Content

What topics does the training cover?

The programme covers observability principles and the three pillars, metrics, logs and distributed tracing, SLIs, SLOs and error budgets, OpenTelemetry and telemetry pipelines, alerting and incident response, and the role of observability in SRE and AIOps.

Can a beginner take this course?

Yes. There are no prerequisites, and the training starts from observability fundamentals before moving into tooling and practice. Some familiarity with DevOps or IT operations helps, but the course is designed to bring newcomers up to speed.

What are the three pillars of observability?

The three pillars are metrics (quantitative measurements over time), logs (timestamped records of events) and traces (end-to-end records of requests across distributed systems). Together they let you understand system behaviour and find root causes quickly.

Is OpenTelemetry covered in the course?

Yes. The training covers OpenTelemetry, the vendor-neutral, industry-standard framework for collecting metrics, logs and traces, including SDKs, collectors, semantic conventions and sampling strategies for managing cost at scale.

Are practice questions and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and mock exams mapped to the 40-question OBSF format, so you can identify weak areas, build recall and go into the exam with confidence.

How long is the Observability Foundation training?

The instructor-led programme runs for 16 hours, typically delivered as two full days or four half-days. The schedule can flex for corporate groups to fit around your team's availability.
