What is the format of the Observability Foundation exam?

The OBSF exam is an open-book, single-answer multiple-choice examination based on the DevOps Institute Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint. It covers the three pillars, SLIs/SLOs/SLAs, OpenTelemetry, alerting and organisational observability practices.

How many questions are on the OBSF exam and how long is it?

The exam has 40 questions and you have 60 minutes (one hour) to complete it. It is delivered as an open-book, single-answer multiple-choice paper.

What is the passing score for Observability Foundation?

The pass mark is 65%, which means answering at least 26 of the 40 questions correctly. Broad understanding across all topic areas of the exam blueprint gives you the best chance of passing.

How and where do I take the OBSF exam?

You can take the exam online with proctoring through PeopleCert OnVUE, or at an authorised test centre. This lets you sit the 40-question, 60-minute paper from home, the office or a nearby centre in the Philippines.

What happens if I do not pass on the first attempt?

You can re-sit the exam under the DevOps Institute re-examination policy. Our training includes practice questions, mock exams and first-attempt guidance to help you pass with confidence and reduce the risk of a retake.

What topics does the Observability Foundation training cover?

The programme covers six areas: observability principles and the three pillars; metrics, logs and distributed tracing; SLIs, SLOs, SLAs and error budgets; OpenTelemetry and telemetry pipelines; alerting strategy and incident response; and SRE, AIOps and exam preparation.

What are the three pillars of observability?

The three pillars are metrics, logs and traces. Metrics measure system behaviour over time, logs record discrete events, and traces follow a request end to end across distributed systems. Together they let you understand why a system behaves as it does.

What is OpenTelemetry and why does it matter?

OpenTelemetry (OTel) is the vendor-neutral standard for collecting metrics, logs and traces from software systems. The course teaches its SDKs, collectors and sampling strategies so you can instrument services consistently and manage telemetry cost.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full mock exams aligned to the 40-question, open-book OBSF format, so you can identify weak areas and build exam readiness before you sit the paper.

Is the courseware aligned with the latest OBSF blueprint?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current DevOps Institute Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint and Body of Knowledge, so you study the concepts, tooling and practices the exam actually assesses.
