    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an open-book, multiple-choice examination taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 60 minutes to complete it. It is taken online without a proctor through your Scrum Alliance member account.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    The passing score is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Because the exam is open book, focus on understanding the Scrum framework rather than memorising answers.

    How many attempts do I get, and what if I do not pass?

    Candidates typically get three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing the course, at no extra cost. Our practice questions and trainer guidance are designed to help you pass on the first attempt.

    Do I need to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

    Yes. Attending an approved CSM course delivered by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory. The online exam cannot be accessed until you complete the course, after which you have 90 days to sit it.

    Which Scrum Guide is the CSM exam based on?

    The CSM curriculum and exam are aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, together with the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

    The course covers six areas from the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artefacts, and the Scrum Master role.

    Do I need prior experience to take the CSM course?

    No. CSM has no formal education or work-experience prerequisites, so it suits beginners as well as those already in Scrum teams. The trainer builds concepts from the ground up with hands-on exercises and real-world examples.

    What learning materials are provided?

    You receive Scrum Alliance CSM-aligned courseware, industry case studies illustrating facilitation, coaching and impediment removal, and practice questions mapped to the 50-question, open-book exam format.

    How long is the CSM course?

    The CSM programme runs for 16 hours of instructor-led training, delivered as two full days or four half-days. This exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hour requirement for a CSM course.

    Is the course aligned with the latest Scrum Guide?

    Yes. The courseware is aligned with the current Scrum Guide (2020 edition) and the current Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives, so you learn the framework as it stands today.
