Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB) is the advanced credential awarded by IASSC for professionals who lead complex, data-driven improvement projects. It validates expertise across all five DMAIC phases, including advanced statistics, Lean tools and project leadership.

    General

What is the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification?

The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB) is the advanced credential awarded by IASSC for professionals who lead complex, data-driven improvement projects. It validates expertise across all five DMAIC phases, including advanced statistics, Lean tools and project leadership.

Is the Black Belt certification worth it for my career?

Yes. Black Belt holders lead high-impact projects and qualify for senior continuous improvement, quality and operations roles. In Cape Town these roles command strong salaries, and certified Black Belts are scarce, so the credential offers a clear return on investment.

Who should take Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training?

It suits quality managers, operations leaders, project managers and continuous improvement specialists who want to lead improvement at scale. It also fits Green Belts ready to advance and consultants who need a globally recognised credential.

Do I need prerequisites to enrol?

No. There are no formal prerequisites for the Black Belt. No specific degree, work experience or prior certification is required, though improvement experience helps. Anyone ready to learn advanced Lean Six Sigma can enrol.

How long is the Black Belt certification valid?

The credential carries Current status for three years from the date of certification. To stay current, you pass the recertification exam before the three-year period elapses, as set out by the certifying body.

Is the Black Belt recognised by employers in Cape Town?

Yes. It is a globally recognised, independent credential valued by Cape Town employers across manufacturing, FMCG, financial services, retail and BPO that run large operations and prize measurable improvement.

    Pricing

What is included in the Black Belt course fee?

The fee covers instructor-led training, courseware aligned to the Black Belt Body of Knowledge, practice questions, mock exams and learner support. The exam voucher is purchased separately. For full inclusions, request a quote from a learning advisor.

How much does Black Belt training cost in Cape Town?

Training fees vary by format and schedule, so pricing is available on request. Live virtual, classroom and corporate options are priced differently. Contact a learning advisor for current Cape Town batch fees and any offers.

Is the exam fee included in the training price?

No. The Black Belt exam voucher is billed separately by the certifying body, with pricing that varies by region. Confirm the current voucher fee when you book, and we can guide you through the process.

Do you offer group or corporate discounts?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for teams across Cape Town. Ask about corporate or group pricing for a tailored quote.

What payment methods and instalment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

    Exam

What is the format of the Black Belt exam?

The IASSC Black Belt exam is a closed-book, 150-question multiple-choice paper. A reference document with formulas and tables is provided, and questions span all five DMAIC phases.

How many questions are on the exam and how long is it?

The exam has 150 scored multiple-choice questions, and some forms include up to 15 additional unscored questions. You have four hours (240 minutes) to complete it, with extra time available for non-native speakers.

What is the passing score for the Black Belt exam?

You need a minimum of 580 points out of 750 to pass. Questions are weighted across the DMAIC phases, so broad mastery of all five phases is the best preparation strategy.

What is the exam application process?

Prepare through training, then purchase the Black Belt exam voucher from IASSC and choose online proctored delivery or a Pearson VUE test centre. Schedule and sit the exam, and on passing you receive your certificate, digital badge and register listing.

How is the exam delivered, online or at a centre?

Both. You can sit the exam online with on-demand remote proctoring, available around the clock, or at a Pearson VUE test centre. Choose whichever is more convenient when you book.

What happens if I do not pass the first time?

You can retake the exam by purchasing another voucher. Our trainers provide preparation support, practice questions and mock exams modelled on the real format to help you pass with confidence.

    Course Content

What topics does the Black Belt training cover?

The training covers all five DMAIC phases: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. You learn advanced statistics, hypothesis testing, regression, design of experiments, statistical process control and Lean tools such as 5S, Kanban and Poka-Yoke.

Can a beginner take Black Belt training, or do I need experience?

Improvement experience helps, but there are no formal prerequisites. The programme builds from core concepts to advanced statistics, and trainers support you throughout, so motivated newcomers can succeed with structured practice.

What learning resources and materials are provided?

You receive structured courseware aligned to the Black Belt Body of Knowledge, practice questions, mock exams, templates and quizzes covering each DMAIC phase to reinforce learning and build exam readiness.

Are there practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full-length mock exams modelled on the 150-question, four-hour format, helping you identify weak areas and build confidence before the real exam.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest Black Belt standard?

Yes. The courseware follows the current Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Body of Knowledge structured around the five DMAIC phases, so what you learn matches what the exam assesses.
