What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance portal after you complete an approved course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes. It is open book, so you can refer to materials during the exam, and it is taken online without a proctor.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

The pass mark is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Aim for broad understanding across all six CSM topic areas rather than memorising isolated facts.

How many attempts do I get and when can I sit the exam?

You have up to three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing your course. If you do not pass within those attempts, verify the current retake policy on the Scrum Alliance portal.

Which standard is the CSM exam based on?

The exam is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, the November 2020 edition, which introduced the Product Goal and framed the Sprint Goal and Definition of Done as commitments.

How long is the CSM course?

Yes. The CSM is designed for professionals new to Scrum as well as those formalising existing knowledge. No prior experience is required, and the trainer builds concepts from the ground up with hands-on exercises and realistic scenarios.

You receive Scrum Alliance aligned courseware, case studies illustrating facilitation and impediment removal, practice questions in the CSM exam format, and guidance to earn Scrum Education Units for future renewal.

What is the next step after CSM?

The Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) is the next level in the Scrum Alliance Scrum Master track, covering advanced facilitation and coaching. The CSM is the mandatory prerequisite, and A-CSM also requires time spent in a Scrum Master role after earning the CSM.
