PRINCE2 Certification Eligibility Requirement

Be a successful Project Manager by completing your Prince2 certification. This post talks about the eligibility criteria for appearing in the PRINCE2 certification examinations at Foundation and Practitioner levels. The requirements to be fulfilled in terms of training and others are also discussed.

PRINCE2 Certification Eligibility for Foundation Level

There are no strict rules governing your eligibility for Foundation Level certification. Some pre-requisites include:

  • Basic understanding of the principles and philosophies of project management
  • Can be working in a supporting role in any organization project
  • Can have completed any generic project management course

PRINCE2 Certification Eligibility for Practitioner Level

PRINCE2 certification eligibility criteria for individuals aspiring to appear in the Practitioner level exam is a bit complicated.

You must

  • Hold PRINCE2 Foundation certification (or higher)
  • Have obtained the certificate after 1 January 2009

If you are a member of the Project Management Professional (PMP) community,

  • Your prior learning and achievements within the community will be recognized (valid from 1 July 2014)
  • You must furnish documentary proof of prior PMP certification to Axelos’s Examination Institute (EI) to showcase that the qualification is still relevant

You can also fulfil PRINCE2 eligibility criteria if you have any/ more of the following qualifications:

  • Project Management Institute (PMI)
  • Project Management Professional® (PMP)
  • Certified Associate in Project Management® (CAPM)
  • International Project Management Association (IPMA)
  • IPMA Level A® (Certified Projects Director)
  • IPMA Level B® (Certified Senior Project Manager)
  • IPMA Level C® (Certified Project Manager)
  • IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)

Notes:

  • Individual IPMA member associations may have local interpretations of aforesaid certificates
  • United Kingdom’s IPMA Member Association is equivalent to The Association for Project Management (APM)
  • Hence, IPMA Level D certification is equal to APM Project Management Qualification (APMP)
  • United States of America’s Member Association enjoys the same status as the International Project Management Association (IPMA)
  • Hence, IPMA Level D certification is equivalent to the Certified Project Management Associate

Specific Training Needed to Qualify for PRINCE2 Certification Exam

For PRINCE2 eligibility, you need to be conversant with the practices of project management as specified by Axelos. For this,

  • You can engage in self-study or
  • You may undertake a formalized training program

If you want to enroll for training, you need to keep the below-mentioned points in mind.

  • It must be through an Accredited Training Organization (ATO)
  • Only ATOs and their authorized affiliates have licenses to offer training courses
  • The courses should have official AXELOS trademarks, brands, and copyright material

PRINCE2 certification requirements get updated from time to time, so you need to check the Axelos site before proceeding further.

FAQs on PRINCE2 Certification

You could be involved in projects in any supporting role like administration, marketing, technical troubleshooting, etc.

If you have completed the Foundation Level certification and is leading a project within your organization, you can appear for the Practitioner Level exam.

Axelos accredits the ATO through a process that involves a rigorous assessment of the organization's management systems, course materials, and trainers. This assures the quality of training provided.

There are many certifications that you can follow to pursue a career in project management. At the foundation level, Axelos validates that the candidate understands the principles of applying project management. The related recognized certifications dwell on similar concepts. AXELOS, therefore, deems it appropriate to recognize that prior learning when considering eligibility for a candidate to progress to Prince2 Practitioner.

This can be a certificate, a confirmation letter from Axelos, or a letter from a former Examinations Institute confirming that you hold a current certification.

No, only the current certification will qualify as a prerequisite.
