To be eligible for sitting in PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner exam, you need to fulfill or provide proof of prerequisites as specified by Axelos, the body that conducts the exam. Prerequisites for Appearing in PRINCE2 Foundation Exam

For taking the Foundation level course and subsequently sit in the exam, you need not submit any documentary evidence of your past qualifications.
Some theoretical prerequisites are applicable which include:

  • Basic understanding of the principles and philosophies of project management.
  • Experience of working in a supporting role in any organization project.
  • Experience of having completed any generic project management course.
  • Classroom training for PRINCE2 2017 Foundation lasting two and a half days.
  • Self-study for the Foundation exam or online distance learning.
  • Training from AXELOS' Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs).

Prerequisites for Appearing in PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam

The PRINCE2 Practitioner requirements are outlined below.
You must

  • Hold PRINCE2 Foundation certification (or higher).
  • Have obtained the certificate after 1 January 2009.

If you are a member of the Project Management Professional (PMP) community:

  • Your prior learning and achievements within the community will be recognized (valid from 1 July 2014).
  • You must furnish documentary proof of prior PMP certification to Axelos’s Examination Institute (EI) to showcase that the qualification is still relevant.

You can also fulfill PRINCE2 eligibility criteria if you have any/more of following qualifications:

  • Project Management Institute (PMI) (details at www.pmi.org).
  • Project Management Professional® (PMP).
  • Certified Associate in Project Management® (CAPM).
  • International Project Management Association (IPMA) (details at http://www.ipma.world).
  • IPMA Level A® (Certified Projects Director).
  • IPMA Level B® (Certified Senior Project Manager).
  • IPMA Level C® (Certified Project Manager).
  • IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate).

Notes:

  • Individual IPMA member associations may have local interpretations of aforesaid certificates.
  • United Kingdom’s IPMA Member Association is equivalent to The Association for Project Management (APM).
  • Hence, IPMA Level D certification is equal to APM Project Management Qualification (APMP).
  • United States of America’s Member Association enjoys the same status as the International Project Management Association (IPMA)
  • Hence, IPMA Level D certification is equivalent to the Certified Project Management Associate.

For acquiring PRINCE2 Practitioner qualifications, you need to be conversant with the practices of project management as specified by Axelos. For this,

  • You can engage in self-study.
  • You may undertake a formalized training program (online or classroom).
  • If you want to enroll for training, you need to keep the below-mentioned points in mind.
  • It must be through an Accredited Training Organization (ATO).
  • Only ATOs and their authorized affiliates have licenses to offer training courses.
  • The courses should have official AXELOS trademarks, brands, and copyright material.
  • Use the Certified Partner search (https://www.axelos.com/find-a-training-provider) for finding an ATO that is offering PRINCE2 training services.

PRINCE2 certification requirements get updated from time to time, so you need to check the Axelos site before proceeding further.

PRINCE2 Agile® Practitioner Certification Prerequisites

You can appear for the exam of PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner certificate if you hold any of the following certifications:

  • PRINCE2® Foundation (or higher).
  • PRINCE2 Agile® Foundation.
  • Project Management Professional® (PMP)*.
  • Certified Associate in Project Management® (CAPM)*.
  • IPMA Levels A, B, C and D® (Certified Projects Director).

Prior to booking an exam where the prerequisite is applicable, you need to ensure that you must possess verifiable proof of completion of that prerequisite. Prerequisite can be pass certificate (Foundation Exam, for example), a letter issued by Axelos, or EI (Examination Institute) attesting that you hold the needful certification.

Provided your training institute had allowed you to appear for the exam, the exam result would be withheld till the time you provide the needful prerequisite to PeopeCert (the agency that accredits institutes on behalf of Axelos). If you are not in a position to furnish the required prerequisite, you will have to complete that prerequisite successfully prior to the release of the exam result.

Yes, the training institute would conduct the training after completing the classroom, online or self-learning period. You need to contact the institute to learn about the exact dates.

There are many certifications, including PRINCE2, which you can follow to pursue a career in project management. At the foundation level, Axelos validates that the candidate understands the principles of applying project management. The related recognized certifications dwell on similar concepts. AXELOS, therefore, deems it appropriate to recognize that prior learning when considering eligibility for a candidate to progress to PRINCE2 Practitioner.

  • Result: 44 marks or more required to pass (out of 80 available) - 55%
  • Examination duration: Two-and-a-half hours’ (150 minutes) duration, no additional reading time
  • Type: Open book exam (official PRINCE2 manual only)
