Eligibility Criteria for ITIL Certifications

What do some of the largest organizations in the world, like Microsoft, Walmart, Citi, Sony, Disney, Boeing and Toyota, have in common? They all have adopted Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) guidelines to implement, manage and support IT service deliveries in their establishments.

If you are interested in building your career in IT service management (ITSM), getting an ITIL certification is the logical course of action. The credential demonstrates that you have the required knowledge and capability to make a significant contribution to ITSM in your organization, as well as enhances your marketability to potential employers all around the world.

The various levels of ITIL certifications are: ITIL Foundation, ITIL Intermediate, ITIL Managing Across the lifecycle (MALC), ITIL Expert and ITIL Master. In order to become an ITIL-certified professional, you need to satisfy the eligibility requirements of each of the levels. These are described below.

Eligibility Criteria for Each of the ITIL Certifications:

ITIL Foundation Eligibility Criteria

The ITIL Foundation certification is an entry-level qualification that gives you a general awareness about the key elements, concepts and terminologies of ITIL Service Lifecycle. There is no specific prerequisite for this certification level. It is best suited for individuals who are looking to gain a basic understanding of the framework. It is also recommended for IT professionals who work with organizations that have adopted ITIL and want to start making a contribution.

ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle Eligibility Criteria

ITIL Intermediate is the second-level certification, and is broken into two streams: ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle and ITIL Intermediate Service Capability. The ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle certification is divided into the following modules:

  • Service Strategy (SS)

  • Service Design (SD)

  • Service Transition (ST)

  • Service Operation (SO)

  • Continual Service Improvement (CSI)

For all the ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle module certifications, the eligibility criteria are:

  • You need to hold 2 credits from the ITIL Foundation certification examination.

  • You must have 21 contact hours of instruction for the syllabus with an accredited training organization.

  • Two years of work experience in ITSM is recommended.

The ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle certifications are recommended for you if you are aiming for a management or team leader role in your organization that has got wide management focus on ITIL practice areas. The education associated with these credentials also comes in handy when you have to work across teams and manage multiple capability areas.

ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle Eligibility Criteria

If you want to have a deep understanding about the processes and roles of the ITIL Service Lifecycle, getting certified in ITIL Intermediate Service Capability modules is the best option. This is a second-level certification. The various modules of this stream are:

  • Service Offerings and Agreements (SOA)

  • Release, Control and Validation (RCV)

  • Operational Support and Analysis (OSA)

  • Planning, Protection and Optimization (PPO)

For all the Service Capability module certifications, you need to satisfy the following eligibility requirements:

  • You need to gain 2 credits from the ITIL Foundation certification examination.

  • You must have 30 contact hours of instruction for the syllabus with an accredited training organization.

  • Two years of work experience in ITSM is recommended.

ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) Eligibility Criteria

A third-level certification, ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) is the final required module you must take in order to achieve the ITIL Expert level credential. This credential showcases your knowledge of the ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle and Service Capability streams.

In order to become an ITIL-MALC certified professional, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • You need to have 17 credits, which represents a balanced study of ITIL concepts.

  • These 17 credits are made up of 2 credits from ITIL Foundation and a minimum of 15 credits from ITIL Intermediate Service Lifecycle/Service Capability or complementary qualifications.

  • You must have at least 30 hours of formal instruction from an accredited training organization.

ITIL Expert Eligibility Criteria

This certification shows that you have superior knowledge and skills of ITIL’s best practice-approach to ITSM. There is no examination at this level; however, you must have acquired a balanced knowledge across ITIL practice areas.

The eligibility requirements are:

  • You should have acquired a total of 22 credits towards becoming an ITIL Expert. These 22 credits are broken into: 2 credits from ITIL Foundation; a minimum of 15 credits from ITIL Intermediate levels, including a maximum of 6 credit values from complementary certifications if required; and 5 credits from ITIL MALC.

  • You must have a balanced knowledge across the ITIL Service Lifecycle.

ITIL Master Eligibility Criteria

As an ITIL Master, you will be able to apply ITIL principles, methods and techniques in the workplace. This final level of certification does not have any supporting examination; instead, you will be assessed based on written submissions and oral interviews.

The eligibility requirements of this certification are:

  • You should be an ITIL Expert

  • You should have five years of work experience in IT service management in managerial, leadership or higher/senior management advisory level roles.

  • You must have hands-on involvement in implementing ITIL practices and must be able to provide adequate proof of your role in these assignments.
