What Is Value Stream Mapping and Why It Matters in LatviaUntitledA Lean Skill for Leaner Operations

Value Stream Mapping Training in Latvia is a practical, one-day skills programme that teaches you to see the whole flow of value across your operations and remove the waste hidden inside it. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique, rooted in the Toyota Production System, for visualising the end-to-end flow of materials and information needed to deliver a product or service to the customer. You learn to build current-state and future-state value stream maps, calculate takt time and lead time, tell value-adding from non-value-adding activity, and turn a future-state vision into a costed improvement plan. It suits operations and manufacturing managers, Lean practitioners, engineers and supply chain professionals across Latvia's wood, metalworking, food and engineering sectors. As Latvian manufacturers face wage growth outpacing productivity and persistent skills shortages, the ability to map and streamline value streams is a direct route to better throughput and lower cost. Build the skill with Invensis Learning and start applying it the day you return to work.

    For Individuals

    For Individuals

Value Stream Mapping training helps you move from firefighting individual problems to seeing and improving the whole flow of value. You leave able to map a real process, expose the waste inside it, and design a leaner way of working. Whether you work in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare or shared services, VSM gives you a practical, visual method to diagnose bottlenecks and win support for change.

If you want a hands-on Lean skill that shows results quickly, VSM is one of the most direct. You gain a repeatable mapping method, practical exercises, and the confidence to lead improvement conversations across your organisation.

    • Read an entire operation at a glance and pinpoint exactly where waste hides

Market Pressures Driving Demand for Lean Skills in Latvia

    Productivity Growth Has Stalled

Latvian labour productivity has risen only about 0.2% a year since 2022, so employers need people who can find and remove waste in existing operations, not just add resources.

    VSM builds waste-elimination skills

    Wages Are Outpacing Output

Nominal wages are growing around 6% while productivity lags, squeezing margins and making value stream optimisation a priority for manufacturers and service firms alike.

VSM builds value stream optimisation skills

    Skills and Labour Shortages

As older workers retire and too few enter manufacturing, firms must do more with fewer people, raising demand for those who can streamline flow and eliminate rework.

VSM builds flow and efficiency skills

    Export Competitiveness Under Pressure

With exports forecast to grow modestly and energy costs volatile, Latvian industrial firms depend on leaner processes to stay price-competitive in European markets.

VSM builds cost and throughput skills

    Fragmented Process Visibility

Many operations lack a single, shared view of end-to-end flow, so bottlenecks and excess inventory go unseen. Value stream mapping makes the whole flow visible and actionable.

VSM makes the whole flow visible

    Improvement Without a Common Method

Teams often improve in silos with no shared language. VSM gives cross-functional groups one way to diagnose waste and plan Kaizen events together.

    One Shared Language for Improvement

"We trained a cross-functional group and they now share one language for improvement. The onsite session mapped a real value stream from our plant, so the team left with an action plan, not just notes."

Tailored to Our Sites and Teams

"The corporate training was tailored to our food production sites and the trainer knew the shop floor. Our supervisors can now run their own VSM workshops and spot waste we used to miss."

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) training is a practical, one-day skills course that teaches you to map the end-to-end flow of materials and information, identify waste, and design a leaner future state. It is a non-certification Lean course focused on hands-on capability you can apply straight away.

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) training is a practical, one-day skills course that teaches you to map the end-to-end flow of materials and information, identify waste, and design a leaner future state. It is a non-certification Lean course focused on hands-on capability you can apply straight away.

It suits operations and manufacturing managers, Lean practitioners, industrial and process engineers, quality and supply chain professionals, and anyone responsible for improving process flow. It is widely relevant across Latvia's wood, metalworking, food, pharmaceutical and logistics sectors.

Yes. VSM is one of the most direct Lean skills for cutting lead time and cost. As Latvian firms face wage growth outpacing productivity, professionals who can map and streamline value streams are increasingly valued, and the skill applies from day one with no exam to sit.

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful but not required, because the course introduces every relevant concept in the context of value stream mapping.

VSM is rooted in the Toyota Production System and was popularised for Lean practitioners by Mike Rother and John Shook in their 1998 workbook Learning to See. It is an established, stable Lean technique used across manufacturing, healthcare, logistics and services.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for this course?

How am I assessed during the training?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you practise throughout the day by building both a current-state and a future-state value stream map for a realistic scenario, with trainer guidance and feedback.

Will I be able to map a real process afterwards?

Yes. By the end you can select a product family, run a Gemba walk to gather data, draw a current-state map, analyse waste and bottlenecks, design a future-state map, and build an implementation and Kaizen plan.

Is this course accredited by a governing body?

No. Value Stream Mapping is a vendor-neutral Lean technique with no single governing body. The training is grounded in the established VSM method and Lean thinking, and focuses on practical workplace skills rather than a formal credential.

    Course Content

What topics does the training cover?

The course covers six modules: Lean foundations and the eight wastes, VSM standard symbols, creating the current-state map, analysing waste and bottlenecks, designing the future-state map, and implementation and Kaizen planning, all with hands-on exercises.

    How long is the course?

It is delivered in one day (about 8 hours), and can also run as two half-days. The programme covers the full VSM method from Lean foundations through to a costed improvement plan, with mapping exercises throughout.

    Are there hands-on exercises?

Yes. You create both a current-state and a future-state value stream map for a realistic operational scenario during the programme, so you practise the full method rather than only learning the theory.

    What materials are provided?

You receive practical courseware, the standard VSM symbol set, reusable mapping templates, worked examples and reference guides that support you when you apply value stream mapping in your own workplace.

    Can beginners take this course?

Yes. The course is beginner-friendly and has no prerequisites. It introduces all the Lean concepts you need, so professionals new to VSM and experienced practitioners both gain practical, applicable skills.
