What Is the Observability Foundation Certification?UntitledYour Route into Modern Observability

The Observability Foundation (OBSF) certification validates a foundational understanding of the concepts, practices and tools needed to implement observability in modern IT environments. Delivered as instructor-led Observability Foundation certification training in the Netherlands, this programme equips DevOps, SRE and platform engineers to move from traditional monitoring to true observability. Awarded by the DevOps Institute and delivered through PeopleCert, the credential is built on the current Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint (Body of Knowledge). You learn the three pillars of observability, metrics, logs and distributed traces, alongside OpenTelemetry, SLIs, SLOs and error budgets, so you can understand why systems behave the way they do, not only when they break. The training suits engineers and technical leads across Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht who support cloud-native and microservices platforms. With a vendor-neutral, globally recognised credential that is valid for three years, you gain the vocabulary and practical grounding Dutch employers increasingly ask for. Start your observability journey with Invensis Learning.

Invensis Learning is a Peoplecert Accredited Training Organization (2778) in Netherlands, approved to deliver official Observability Foundation training using accredited courseware and standards.

Why Dutch Employers Are Investing in Observability

    Cloud-Native Complexity

Dutch enterprises are migrating to Kubernetes and microservices, where failures are harder to predict. Observability across metrics, logs and traces is exactly the capability this credential is built to develop.

OBSF builds the three-pillar observability skillset

    Fintech Reliability and Compliance

Payments and banking players such as Adyen, ING and ABN AMRO must keep services available under strict DNB and regulatory expectations. Certified observability practice supports the reliability these obligations demand.

OBSF builds SLI, SLO and error-budget skills

    Peak-Traffic E-Commerce and Travel

High-traffic platforms like Booking.com and Bol.com lose revenue when performance dips. Observability helps teams detect and resolve issues in real time before customers feel the impact.

OBSF builds real-time incident response skills

    Observability Talent Shortage

The Dutch market has plenty of developers but far fewer engineers who can design observability properly. A recognised foundation credential makes holders more visible and more hireable.

OBSF makes certified engineers stand out

    Tool Sprawl and Rising Cost

Fragmented monitoring stacks and high-cardinality data drive up cost. Skills in OpenTelemetry, sampling and pipeline design help organisations control spend while improving insight.

OBSF builds telemetry-pipeline and sampling skills

    Alert Fatigue and On-Call Burnout

Noisy alerts and reactive firefighting wear teams down. Observability practice shifts alerting from symptom to burn-rate and supports blameless, continuous-learning incident response.

OBSF builds alerting and retrospective skills

Skills You Will Build in This ProgrammeMetrics, Logs, Traces and Beyond

Observability Foundation training gives you the concepts and practical grounding to keep modern distributed systems reliable and understandable. By the end, you can instrument systems, define SLOs and prepare confidently for the OBSF exam.

Master the Three Pillars of Observability

You will learn the three pillars of observability, metrics, logs and distributed traces, and how to correlate them for fast root-cause analysis. This is the foundation of the Observability Foundation programme and shows how observability differs from traditional monitoring in cloud-native systems.

    Instrument Metrics, Logs and Traces

Work with counters, gauges and histograms, structured logging and log aggregation, and distributed tracing with spans and context propagation. You learn to instrument services so their internal state can be understood from external outputs.

Define SLIs, SLOs and Error Budgets

Set service-level indicators that matter to users, write meaningful service-level objectives, and use error budgets to balance reliability with delivery speed. You also learn how SLAs relate to customer commitments.

    Build Pipelines with OpenTelemetry

Understand OpenTelemetry SDKs, collectors and semantic conventions, plus telemetry pipelines and sampling strategies. You learn how to route and transform telemetry while managing high-cardinality data and cost.

    Design Alerting and Incident Response

Move from alert-on-symptom to alert-on-burn-rate, design on-call rotations that reduce alert fatigue, and run incident retrospectives. You learn blameless post-mortems and continuous-learning loops.

    Apply SRE and AIOps Practices

See how observability underpins mature site reliability engineering and where AIOps and anomaly detection are heading. You also cover exam structure and time management for the 40-question, 60-minute paper.

The Observability Foundation exam is an open-book, single-answer multiple-choice paper based on the DevOps Institute Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint (Body of Knowledge). It is delivered online proctored via PeopleCert OnVUE or at an authorised test centre.

How many questions are on the exam and how long is it?

    Course Content

What topics are covered in the training?

The programme covers observability principles and the three pillars, metrics, logs and distributed tracing, SLIs, SLOs and error budgets, OpenTelemetry and telemetry pipelines, alerting and incident response, and SRE, AIOps and exam preparation.

Can a beginner take this course?

Yes. There are no formal prerequisites, so beginners are welcome. Some familiarity with DevOps or IT operations helps, and the trainer builds concepts step by step with practical, cloud-native examples.

What is observability and how does it differ from monitoring?

Observability is the ability to understand a system's internal state from its external outputs. Monitoring tells you when something is wrong; observability helps you understand why, including novel failures you did not predict. The three pillars are metrics, logs and traces.

What is OpenTelemetry and why does it matter?

OpenTelemetry (OTel) is the CNCF project providing a vendor-neutral, standardised framework for collecting metrics, logs and traces. It is the de facto standard for observability instrumentation, and the course covers its SDKs, collectors and conventions.

Is the courseware aligned with the current exam blueprint?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current DevOps Institute Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint (Body of Knowledge), covering the concepts, pillars, tooling and practices tested in the OBSF exam.
