What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an online, open-book, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes (one hour). It is taken online without a proctor through the Scrum Alliance portal.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Because the exam is open book, our training focuses on genuine understanding across all six CSM topic areas.

Do I have to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory, and the exam cannot be accessed without completing it. You then have 90 days from course completion to take the online exam.

What if I do not pass the exam on the first try?

Candidates typically have three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing the course, so there is room to retake if needed. Our trainers provide guidance and practice to help you pass on the first attempt. Verify the current attempt policy at scrumalliance.org.

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers the six CSM topic areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artefacts, and the Scrum Master role, all aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

Can a beginner take this course without agile experience?

Yes. The CSM has no formal education or work-experience prerequisite and is designed for those new to Scrum or formalising existing knowledge. The trainer builds the framework from first principles, so beginners can follow comfortably.

How long is the CSM training and how is it delivered?

The programme runs for 16 hours of instruction, delivered as two full days or four half-days. It is offered as live virtual, instructor-led training by a Certified Scrum Trainer, which exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hours requirement.

What learning materials and practice are provided?

You receive Scrum Alliance CSM-aligned courseware, industry-driven case studies illustrating facilitation, coaching and impediment removal, and practice aligned to the exam format. These help you apply Scrum in real delivery, not just pass the assessment.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest Scrum Guide?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the November 2020 Scrum Guide, which introduced the Product Goal and the commitments for each artefact. You learn the framework as it stands today.
