What is the next step after CSM?

The Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) is the next level in the Scrum Alliance Scrum Master track, covering advanced facilitation, coaching and stakeholder engagement. CSM is the mandatory prerequisite, and A-CSM also expects time spent in a Scrum Master role after earning the CSM.

The CSM exam is an open-book, multiple-choice test taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It is single-answer format and requires no proctor, so you can sit it at a time that suits you within the access window.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 60 minutes to complete it. Because it is open book, you can refer to materials during the exam, though solid preparation during the course makes it far more comfortable.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

The passing score is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. The course prepares you well above this threshold across all six topic areas of the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

How many attempts do I get for the CSM exam?

Candidates typically have three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing the course. If you do not pass at first, you can review the topics and retake within that window, so there is little pressure on any single attempt.

Which standard is the CSM exam based on?

The CSM exam is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and aligned to the current Scrum Guide by Schwaber and Sutherland, the November 2020 edition. Our courseware follows this current standard, so what you study matches how Scrum teams work today.

Course Content

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers the six CSM topic areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team, the Scrum events, the Scrum artifacts, and the Scrum Master role. You also practise facilitation techniques and prepare for the online exam.

Do I need to attend a course to get CSM certified?

Yes. Scrum Alliance requires attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer before you can access the exam. Self-study alone does not qualify. Our instructor-led course meets this requirement and unlocks the online exam on completion.

How long is the CSM course?

The CSM course is a 16-hour programme, delivered as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. This exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact hours and gives you time to work through the framework and practise facilitation.

Are practice questions included in the training?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions aligned to the 50-question, open-book exam format, along with case studies on facilitation, coaching and impediment removal. These help you identify weak areas and build confidence before you sit the exam.

Is the courseware aligned to the latest Scrum Guide?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition, and to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives. You learn the Product Goal, the Sprint Goal as a commitment, and the Definition of Done as they appear in the current standard.
