The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions with a 60-minute (one hour) time limit. It is open book, so you may refer to your materials during the assessment.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need to answer at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly, a pass mark of 74%. The exam is taken online after you complete your CSM course.

How many attempts do I get for the CSM exam?

Candidates typically have three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing the course. If you need further attempts, verify the current policy on the Scrum Alliance portal.

Do I have to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course led by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is mandatory. The exam unlocks only after you complete the course, and you have 90 days to sit it.

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers all six CSM areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artifacts, and the Scrum Master role, all aligned to the current Scrum Guide.

Can a beginner take the CSM course?

Yes. The CSM is an entry-level certification with no prerequisites. Beginners and those new to Scrum are welcome, and the trainer guides you through the framework with practical, real-world examples.

Will I learn practical skills, not just theory?

Yes. The course builds facilitation, coaching and impediment-removal skills through case studies and exercises across Sprint Planning, the Daily Scrum, Sprint Review and Retrospective, so you can apply Scrum from day one.

How long is the CSM training?

The instructor-led CSM programme runs for 16 hours, delivered as two full days or four half-days. This meets the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hour requirement for the course.
