What Is Value Stream Mapping and What Will You Learn?UntitledA Practical Lean Skill for Operations

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean management technique for visualising, analysing and improving the flow of materials and information required to bring a product or service from concept to customer, and this Value Stream Mapping training in India builds that skill from end to end. Rooted in the Toyota Production System and popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998), VSM is one of the most practical tools in Lean. Over a focused one-day (8-hour) programme, you learn the five Lean principles, the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME), and how to draw current-state and future-state maps using standard symbols. Through hands-on exercises you practise walking a value stream, capturing process data, calculating takt time and designing a leaner future state. This is a non-certification skills course: there is no exam or awarding body. You build capability you can apply immediately, and receive a Course Completion Certificate from Invensis Learning. It suits operations managers, engineers, Lean practitioners and improvement professionals across India.

Market Pressures Driving Demand for Lean Flow Skills in India

    Margin and Cost Pressure

Rising input and labour costs squeeze margins across Indian manufacturing and services. Teams that can map value streams and strip out non-value-adding work protect profitability without cutting corners.

    VSM builds waste-elimination skills

Long Lead Times and Excess Inventory

Pushed production and forecast-driven batches leave cash tied up in work in progress. Value stream mapping reveals where inventory piles up so operations can shorten lead time and free working capital.

VSM builds flow and inventory skills

    Global Buyers Auditing Indian Suppliers

China+1 realignment means overseas customers are qualifying Indian plants on flow, quality and delivery. Value stream discipline helps suppliers prove lean, reliable operations and win that work.

    VSM builds supplier-readiness skills

    Scaling Plants Without Standard Flow

PLI-backed capacity is expanding fast, but new lines often lack standard, balanced flow. Mapping current and future states gives teams a shared plan to scale up without adding waste.

    VSM builds future-state design skills

    Waste Hidden Across Functions

The eight wastes of Lean hide in handoffs between operations, quality, logistics and planning. A single value stream map makes them visible so cross-functional teams can act together.

    VSM makes cross-functional waste visible

Bottlenecks in Service and Software Flows

India's GCCs and IT teams apply VSM beyond the shop floor to back-office and delivery pipelines, finding the bottlenecks that slow claims, transactions and software releases.

    VSM builds end-to-end flow skills

    Your India Operations Transformation

From Firefighting to Designing Better Flow,

    The Shift This Training Delivers

India's operations and manufacturing base is expanding with Make in India and PLI investment, and employers increasingly separate teams that can design lean flow from those that cannot. Here is the shift this training helps you make.

    Today

Waste and delays are accepted as normal in day-to-day operations

    After VSM

You quantify value-added time versus lead time and expose the real cost of waste

    Today

Your experience shows delivery, but no recognised Lean toolset

    After VSM

You bring a practical, in-demand VSM skill valued across Indian manufacturing and services

    Today

Cross-functional teams argue about symptoms without shared facts

    After VSM

You facilitate mapping sessions that align operations, quality and logistics on one picture

    You master VSM

    Before

You can see problems on the floor but lack a way to diagnose the whole flow

    Now you have

A repeatable method to map the end-to-end value stream and pinpoint waste

    Before

Improvement ideas stay local and rarely add up to system-level gains

    Now you have

The skill to target the bottleneck and lift overall throughput, not just one step

    Before

Flow, inventory and lead time live in people's heads, not on paper

    Now you have

A shared current-state and future-state map the whole team can act on

    Before

Kaizen efforts start without a clear, prioritised plan

    Now you have

A future-state design and implementation roadmap that sequences the right work

"The teams that pull ahead are the ones who can see their whole value stream, not just their own step in it."

The Practical VSM Skills You Will BuildFrom Current-State Map to Future-State Plan

You will learn to create current-state and future-state value stream maps, expose the eight wastes and build a practical plan to improve flow. Each module builds a hands-on skill you can apply to your own operations straight after the programme.

Map the Current State from Observation

Select a product family, walk the value stream on a Gemba walk, and capture cycle time, changeover, uptime and inventory to build an honest current-state map with a value-added versus lead-time timeline.

Spot the Eight Wastes of Lean

Read a value stream map to identify the eight wastes (DOWNTIME): defects, overproduction, waiting, non-utilised talent, transportation, inventory, motion and extra processing, and separate value-adding from non-value-adding work.

Use Standard VSM Symbols and Data Boxes

Apply the standard symbol set for process, material and information flow, and record process data in data boxes so any team can read and trust the map.

Calculate Takt Time and Find the Bottleneck

Work out takt time from customer demand, compare it with cycle times, and locate the constraint that limits flow so improvement effort targets the highest-impact step.

    Design a Leaner Future State

Use the eight future-state questions to design continuous flow, pull systems, supermarkets and a single pacemaker, and quantify the lead-time and inventory gains against the current state.

    Plan Implementation and Kaizen

Turn the future-state map into a prioritised roadmap of workstreams and Kaizen events, set baseline metrics, and standardise improvements so the gains hold over time.

Do I need prior Lean experience to attend?

No. There are no prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste and flow is helpful but not required, as the programme introduces all the relevant Lean concepts in the context of VSM.

Where does Value Stream Mapping come from?

VSM is rooted in the Toyota Production System and was formalised for Lean practitioners by Mike Rother and John Shook in their 1998 workbook Learning to See. There is no single governing body for the technique itself.

    Is this a certification course?

No. This is a non-certification skills training programme with no exam or awarding body. You receive a Course Completion Certificate from Invensis Learning and build practical VSM skills you can apply straight away.

    Pricing

How much does the Value Stream Mapping training cost in India?

Fees vary by delivery mode (live virtual, classroom or corporate), group size and schedule. For current India pricing, request a quote from Invensis Learning and a learning advisor will share the options that fit you.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee typically covers instructor-led training across all six VSM modules, hands-on mapping exercises, learning materials and a Course Completion Certificate. Ask about the exact inclusions for your chosen format when you request a quote.

Do you offer group or corporate pricing?

Yes. Corporate and group training is available with pricing based on team size and delivery format. It is ideal for plants and cross-functional teams who want to map a real value stream together. Ask about corporate pricing for your team.

Are there any additional or hidden costs?

No. Because this is a non-certification course, there is no separate exam or awarding-body fee. The training fee covers the programme itself; request a quote for a clear, itemised breakdown.

How do I pay and are instalments available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and instalment options are available on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for the Value Stream Mapping training?

No. This is a non-certification course with no exam. Learning is reinforced through hands-on current-state and future-state mapping exercises and group discussion during the one-day programme.

    How is my learning assessed?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you practise VSM directly through guided mapping exercises and group activities, applying each concept as you learn it so you leave able to use the skill at work.

What will I receive on completion?

You receive a Course Completion Certificate from Invensis Learning. No external credential is awarded, as the technique has no certifying body, but the practical skills are immediately applicable.

Does the course completion certificate expire?

No. There is no renewal or maintenance requirement. The VSM skills you build do not expire and can be applied to improvement projects in your workplace right away.

Will I be able to run a VSM workshop after the training?

Yes. On completion you can select a product family, run a Gemba walk, draw current and future-state maps using standard symbols, and develop an implementation and Kaizen plan for your operations.

    Course Content

What topics are covered in the VSM training?

The one-day programme covers Lean foundations, standard VSM symbols, creating the current-state map, analysing waste, designing the future-state map, and implementation planning, with hands-on mapping exercises throughout.

What will I learn to do with a value stream map?

You learn to capture process data, calculate takt time, find the bottleneck, expose the eight wastes, design continuous flow and pull, and turn the future-state map into a prioritised improvement plan.

How long is the Value Stream Mapping training?

The course runs for one day (8 hours), and can also be delivered as two half-day sessions. It covers all six VSM modules with concept explanations, symbol training, worked examples and practical exercises.

    Is the training hands-on?

Yes. You create both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic operational scenario during the session, so you practise the full method rather than only learning the theory.

    Can beginners take this course?

Yes. The course is beginner-friendly and open to all. It introduces every Lean concept it uses, so professionals new to Lean and experienced practitioners both gain practical VSM skills.
