Why Icelandic Operations Are Turning to Lean Flow

    The High-Wage Productivity Squeeze

Iceland has some of Europe's highest labour costs, so every hour of waste is expensive. Value stream mapping helps teams raise output per person by removing non-value-adding steps from the flow.

    VSM lifts output per person

Island Logistics and Long Supply Lines

Most materials arrive by sea, so excess inventory and unbalanced flow tie up cash. Mapping the value stream exposes where stock and waiting build up between process steps.

    VSM tightens the supply chain

    Energy-Intensive Aluminium Operations

Three smelters run continuous, capital-heavy operations where flow and uptime decide cost. Value stream analysis targets bottlenecks and changeover losses across the line.

    VSM targets bottlenecks and losses

    Scaling Biopharma Manufacturing

As Alvotech and its peers scale biosimilar production, batch flow and lead time matter more. Mapping gives improvement teams a shared way to design leaner, compliant flow.

    VSM designs leaner batch flow

    Flow Pressure in Seafood Processing

Freshness windows leave little room for delay in filleting, freezing and packing. Mapping helps processors balance lines to demand and cut waiting between stations.

    VSM balances lines to demand

    A Thin Continuous-Improvement Talent Pool

Iceland's small labour market has few trained Lean facilitators. Building VSM skills in-house makes teams self-sufficient in diagnosing and fixing flow problems.

    Your Iceland Operations Transformation

From Reactive Fixes to Designed Flow

    Your Value Stream Transformation

Iceland's operations compete on productivity, not scale, and the teams that can see their whole value stream improve faster than those firefighting step by step. Here is what changes when you can map, analyse and redesign flow.

    Today

Long lead times and excess inventory quietly inflate cost

    After VSM

Flow balanced to takt, with less waiting and work in progress

    Today

Cross-functional teams describe the same problems differently

    After VSM

Operations, quality and logistics aligned on one shared map

    Today

Improvement skills sit with a few individuals, not the wider team

    After VSM

In-house mapping capability that scales across sites and shifts

    You master VSM

    Before

Problems are tackled step by step, with no view of the whole flow

    Now you have

A single-page map of the end-to-end value stream your whole team shares

    Before

Waste is felt across the operation but hard to prove or locate

    Now you have

The eight wastes made visible and pinned to specific process steps

    Before

Improvement ideas are opinion-led and hard to prioritise

    Now you have

A prioritised, evidence-based improvement and Kaizen plan

    Before

Lean is a concept, not a routine your team can repeat

    Now you have

A repeatable current-to-future-state method your team owns

"In a high-wage economy, the advantage goes to teams that can see their flow and design out the waste."

The Practical Lean Skills You Will BuildMapping, Analysis and Improvement Planning

This course shows you exactly how to create and use a value stream map, so you leave able to diagnose flow and design a leaner future state. You build the full VSM skill set across a single, hands-on day, from Lean foundations to a working implementation plan.

See the Value Stream and Its Waste

Define value from the customer's view and separate value-adding, non-value-adding and necessary steps. Spot the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME) that inflate lead time across your operation.

    Apply the Standard VSM Symbols

Use the standard Value Stream Mapping notation for processes, material and information flow, inventory, kanban and data boxes, so your maps stay clear and consistent across teams and sites.

    Build an Accurate Current-State Map

Walk the value stream, capture cycle time, changeover, uptime and inventory, and complete the timeline. Learn to map how work really flows today, not how it is meant to.

    Analyse Flow, Takt and Bottlenecks

Calculate takt time, find the constraint that limits output and read push versus pull. Prioritise the highest-impact improvement opportunities and mark them with Kaizen bursts.

    Design a Leaner Future State

Use the eight future-state questions to design continuous flow, pull systems and levelled scheduling. Quantify the gain in lead time, inventory and flow before you change anything.

Turn the Map into an Action Plan

Break the future state into Kaizen events and a phased roadmap, set baseline metrics, and standardise new ways of working so improvements stick and repeat over time.

Pricing varies by delivery format, group size and whether you book individual or corporate training. Fees are available on request. Talk to a learning advisor for a quote tailored to your needs.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee typically covers instructor-led training across all six modules, hands-on current-state and future-state mapping exercises, reference materials and templates, learner support, and a course completion record from Invensis Learning.

Do you offer corporate or group pricing?

Yes. We offer group and corporate rates for teams trained together, with schedules built around your availability. Ask about corporate pricing for your organisation in Iceland.

How can I pay for the course?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, with instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you.

Is the training good value for the price?

VSM delivers a skill your team can apply from day one, and even a single mapping exercise often exposes waste worth far more than the course fee. Request a quote to see the options for you or your team.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for this course?

No. This is a non-certification skills course with no exam. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion during the one-day programme.

    How is my learning assessed?

There is no formal test. You practise by building both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic scenario, with trainer feedback throughout the day so you leave able to apply the method at work.

Do I receive anything on completion?

Yes. You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. This is a practical skills course rather than a credential from an external awarding body, so there is no separate qualification to maintain.

What will I be able to do after the training?

You will be able to select a product family, walk the value stream to gather data, draw a current-state map with standard symbols, identify waste and the bottleneck, design a future state, and build an implementation and Kaizen plan.

    How long is the training?

The programme runs for one day (eight hours) and can also be delivered as two half-days. It covers Lean foundations, VSM symbols, current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning.

    Course Content

What topics does the VSM course cover?

The course covers six modules: Lean foundations and the value stream, standard VSM symbols, creating the current-state map, analysing the current state, designing the future-state map, and implementation planning and sustaining improvement.

Which VSM symbols will I learn?

You learn the standard VSM symbol set: process boxes and data boxes, material and information flow arrows, inventory triangles, push and pull symbols, kanban, customer and supplier icons, and the Kaizen burst.

    Are there hands-on mapping exercises?

Yes. You practise throughout the day, creating both a current-state and a future-state map for a realistic operational scenario, so the method is embedded through practice rather than theory alone.

Is the course relevant beyond manufacturing?

Yes. While VSM began on the shop floor, it applies equally to seafood processing, pharma, healthcare pathways, logistics, financial services and IT delivery, anywhere you want to visualise and improve process flow.

How does VSM fit with other Lean tools?

VSM is the diagnostic map that defines which improvements to run, so it feeds directly into Kaizen events and Lean Six Sigma projects. It is a strong foundation for further Lean and operational excellence training.
