How to Get PMI-CP Certified in DetroitStep-by-Step Certification Process

The PMI-CP (PMI Construction Professional) certification path in Detroit is a structured single-exam track. Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist credential for the construction industry. It validates the ability to apply project management skills across the construction lifecycle and is designed for construction project managers, superintendents, project engineers, owner's representatives and consultants working on building, civil and infrastructure projects.

    General

What is the PMI-CP certification and who is it for?

The PMI-CP is PMI's specialist credential for the construction industry. It validates the ability to apply project management skills across the construction lifecycle and is designed for construction project managers, superintendents, project engineers, owner's representatives and consultants working on building, civil and infrastructure projects.

Is the PMI-CP worth it for construction professionals in Detroit?

Yes. Detroit's 2026 construction boom, from EV plant retooling to the Gordie Howe International Bridge and data center campuses, has employers competing for credentialed leaders. Construction manager roles average around $141,000 locally, and the PMI-CP proves construction-specific competency. Talk to a learning advisor to plan your path.

Is a PMP required before the PMI-CP?

No. A PMP is not a prerequisite for the PMI-CP. You can apply based on your construction project management experience and education. The two are complementary, though: the PMP validates general project management while the PMI-CP validates construction-specific expertise, and many professionals hold both.

Is the PMI-CP recognized in Detroit and internationally?

Yes. As a PMI credential, the PMI-CP is recognized globally through PMI's network in over 200 countries, including with Detroit general contractors, owners and consultants who run large capital projects. It travels with you across sectors, states and international construction markets.

How long is the PMI-CP certification valid?

The PMI-CP is valid for three years from the date of certification. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle within each three-year cycle, with at least 8 PDUs in each area, reported through PMI's continuing certification requirements system.

    Pricing

How much does PMI-CP training cost in Detroit?

Training fees vary by format and schedule, so pricing is available on request. Your fee covers PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, mock exams and application guidance. The PMI exam fee is billed separately by PMI. Request a quote for current Detroit batch pricing.

What is included in the PMI-CP course fee?

The training fee typically includes PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions, full-length mock exams, downloadable templates, guidance on the four required PMI-CP modules and the PMI application, learner support, and a course completion certificate with contact hours.

Is the PMI exam fee included in the training price?

No. PMI bills the PMI-CP exam fee separately, around USD 520 for PMI members and USD 670 for non-members for reference. PMI membership (about USD 139 per year) can reduce the exam fee. Confirm current amounts at pmi.org before you apply.

Do you offer corporate or group discounts in Detroit?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customized schedules and volume-based pricing for construction project teams, PMOs and field leadership groups across metro Detroit. Contact us for a tailored group quote.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and offer installment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you or your team.

    Exam

What is the format of the PMI-CP exam?

The PMI-CP exam is closed book with multiple-choice questions in single-answer and multiple-answer formats. It is delivered online through Pearson VUE OnVUE proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test center, and is based on the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline.

How many questions are on the PMI-CP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 120 questions and an allotted time of 230 minutes (3 hours 50 minutes). Results are reported with domain-level performance feedback rather than a fixed numeric pass mark.

What are the PMI-CP exam domains and their weights?

There are four domains in the PMI-CP ECO: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%). Contracts Management is by far the largest, reflecting the central role of contracts in construction delivery.

What are the prerequisites to sit the PMI-CP exam?

You must complete all four self-paced PMI-CP course modules and meet one experience and education set: a secondary diploma with 60 months of construction PM experience, a bachelor's degree with 36 months, or a GAC-accredited degree with 24 months, each within the past 10 years, plus 35 contact hours of PM education.

What happens if I do not pass the PMI-CP exam?

You get up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period from application approval. Reexamination fees apply to later attempts. Our practice questions, mock exams and trainer guidance are built to help you pass with strong preparation.

    Course Content

What topics are covered in the PMI-CP training?

The training covers all four ECO domains: Contracts Management (50%), Stakeholder Engagement (30%), Strategy and Scope Management (15%) and Project Governance (5%), plus claims and dispute handling, application guidance and exam strategy across the construction lifecycle.

What are the four mandatory PMI-CP course modules?

Before applying, you complete four self-paced modules in any order, each worth 14 PDUs: Project Communications, Interface Management, Scope and Change Order Management, and Contract and Risk Management. Together they award 56 PDUs that also count toward renewal.

Do I need construction experience to take the training?

Anyone can enroll in the training to build skills and earn contact hours. To sit the PMI-CP exam, PMI requires documented construction project management experience within the past 10 years. Our trainers help you map your experience to the eligibility requirements.

What learning materials and practice are included?

You receive PMI-aligned courseware, practice questions and full-length mock exams mapped to the 120-question format, references to the PMI-CP ECO and Handbook, templates, and chapter-wise quizzes to identify weak areas and build readiness.

Is the courseware aligned with the current PMI-CP standard?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the current PMI-CP Examination Content Outline and the latest edition of the PMBOK Guide, along with construction industry practices referenced by PMI, so you prepare against the standard actually tested.
