Why Lean Skills Are in Demand in South Africa

    The Cost Competitiveness Gap

South Africa runs 20 to 40 percent higher costs than leading low-cost manufacturing bases, so removing waste and improving flow is central to staying competitive.

    Lean Fundamentals builds waste-elimination skills

    Doing More with Constrained Capacity

Load-shedding and supply volatility force teams to do more with less. Lean tools help stabilise flow, cut inventory and protect output when capacity is constrained.

Lean tools stabilise flow and cut waste

    Automotive Masterplan Demands

The South African Automotive Masterplan pushes carmakers and suppliers to raise local content and efficiency, demanding a lean, waste-aware supplier base.

Lean skills support a competitive supply base

    Internal Process and Skills Gaps

Studies link South African operational inefficiency to internal process problems and skills gaps. A Lean-literate workforce closes that gap directly.

Lean training closes the process capability gap

Pressure on Services and Public Sector

Healthcare, financial services and the public sector face rising demand and tight budgets, making waste reduction and flow improvement a priority beyond the factory.

Lean Fundamentals training is a one-day, non-certification course that introduces Lean management: the five Lean principles, the eight wastes (DOWNTIME) and core tools such as 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Kanban, standard work and Kaizen. It suits every industry and role.

Who should attend Lean Fundamentals training?

It is designed for all employees, team members, supervisors, managers and professionals across any sector who want to understand Lean and apply it. It is also the ideal first step for teams starting a Lean or operational excellence programme in South Africa.

Is Lean Fundamentals training worth it?

Yes. You gain practical skills you can use immediately: spotting waste, improving flow and supporting Kaizen. Lean thinking is valued across South African manufacturing, mining, FMCG and services, giving you a recognised, shared foundation to build on.

Do I need prior Lean knowledge or experience?

No. There are no prerequisites. The course introduces every Lean principle and tool from first principles, so beginners and experienced staff alike can take part and apply the learning to their own work.

Which framework is Lean Fundamentals based on?

The course is grounded in the Toyota Production System and the five Lean principles set out by James Womack and Daniel Jones in Lean Thinking (1996): identify value, map the value stream, create flow, establish pull and seek perfection.

    Pricing

How much does Lean Fundamentals training cost in South Africa?

Fees vary by delivery mode (live virtual, classroom or corporate on site), group size and schedule. For current pricing in South Africa, request a quote and a learning advisor will share the options that fit you or your team.

What is included in the course fee?

Your fee covers instructor-led training across all six Lean modules, structured courseware, hands-on waste and 5S exercises, learner support and an Invensis Learning course completion certificate. Request a quote for a full breakdown.

Do you offer group or corporate pricing?

Yes. Lean Fundamentals is often delivered to whole teams as the first step in a Lean deployment, and group and corporate pricing is available. Ask about corporate or group pricing for a tailored quote.

Are there any exam or certification fees?

No. This is a non-certification course with no examination, so there are no exam or awarding-body fees. You pay only the training fee and receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major cards and bank transfers, and instalment options are available on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you or your organisation.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for Lean Fundamentals training?

No. Lean Fundamentals is a non-certification course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through waste-identification exercises, case-study discussions and team activities during the one-day programme.

Do I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes. You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. There is no external credential or awarding body, as this is a skills-based training course rather than a certification.

    How is my learning assessed?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you apply Lean concepts through practical exercises: a waste walk, a simple value stream map and a 5S activity, so you leave able to use the tools in your own work.

Will this course make me Lean certified?

No. This is foundational skills training, not a certification, so it does not award a Lean credential. It gives you the vocabulary and tools that a later Lean Six Sigma or practitioner programme builds on.

What can I do after completing the training?

You will be able to identify the eight wastes, apply the five Lean principles, run a basic waste walk, use 5S and support Kaizen through the PDCA cycle, and take part confidently in Lean improvement activities.

    Course Content

What topics does Lean Fundamentals training cover?

The course covers Lean origins and the Toyota Production System, the five Lean principles, the eight wastes (DOWNTIME), foundational tools (5S, Value Stream Mapping, Kanban, standard work and visual management), Kaizen and PDCA, and applying Lean across industries.

Is the course suitable for non-manufacturing roles?

Yes. While Lean began in manufacturing, the principles apply to healthcare, financial services, logistics, IT, retail and the public sector. The training uses examples from both factory and service environments.

How long is the training and what format is it?
