What Is Quality Function Deployment and the House of Quality?UntitledTurning Customer Needs into Design Targets

Quality Function Deployment Training in South Africa gives product, design and quality professionals a practical command of Quality Function Deployment (QFD), the customer-driven method for turning the Voice of the Customer into clear engineering and design specifications. Developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno, QFD uses the House of Quality matrix to link what customers want to how a product or service delivers it, so teams design quality in from the start rather than inspecting it in later. This one-day, eight-hour programme suits engineers, product managers, quality practitioners and Six Sigma professionals across South Africa's automotive, manufacturing, FMCG, pharmaceutical and services sectors. You learn to capture and structure customer needs, build and interpret every room of the House of Quality, resolve design conflicts, and cascade requirements through parts, process and production planning. QFD is a core tool in Design for Six Sigma and aligns with the customer-focus principles of ISO 9001:2015. This is a non-certification skills course, so there is no exam and no external credential. Instead you leave able to run a Voice of the Customer workshop and facilitate a House of Quality on your own products. Start building customer-driven design capability with Invensis Learning.

Where QFD Skills Take Your Career in South AfricaWhy It Is in Demand

Quality Function Deployment skills are increasingly valued across South Africa's manufacturing base, where seven global vehicle makers, a deep component supply chain, and large FMCG, pharmaceutical and services employers all compete on customer-driven design. As OEMs invest billions in new local models and export quality, professionals who can turn customer needs into design specifications stand out. Demand spans quality engineers, design engineers, product and continuous improvement managers, and here is what the South African market looks like today.

Why South African Employers Need Customer-Driven Design

    Design-For-Export Quality Pressure

South Africa's vehicle makers export to demanding global markets under APQP and IATF 16949 discipline. QFD closes the gap between customer requirements and the specifications engineers actually build.

QFD links customer needs to engineering targets

    Costly Late-Stage Design Changes

Rework and redesign erode margins when problems surface late. QFD captures customer requirements early and makes trade-offs visible, cutting iterations and getting products right the first time.

QFD front-loads the Voice of the Customer

    Localisation and New Model Launches

With Toyota and Ford investing billions in new local models, NPD teams must translate market needs into specifications fast. The House of Quality gives them a structured, traceable way to do it.

    QFD structures new-product development

Voice of the Customer Lost in Handover

Customer needs are often lost between marketing and engineering. The House of Quality keeps every requirement visible from concept to production, so nothing important is dropped along the way.

    QFD keeps requirements traceable

    Efficiency Pressure on Constrained Operations

Energy and cost constraints push South African manufacturers to design efficiency in. QFD ranks the characteristics that matter most, so scarce design effort goes where it delivers the most value.

    QFD prioritises the vital few

    Scarce Customer-Driven Design Skills

Few local practitioners can facilitate a House of Quality end to end. Professionals who can run QFD workshops and cascade requirements are rare and sought-after across manufacturing and services.

    QFD facilitators stand out

Sources: InvestSA, thedtic Automotive Masterplan to 2035; Ecofin Agency, MarkLines (South Africa) 2026.

QFD is the tool that turns customer needs into design decisions. Join South African engineers and product teams who design quality in from the start rather than inspecting it in later. Start your QFD journey today.

    Your South Africa Design-Quality Shift

    From Assumption-Led to Customer-Led Design

    The Shift QFD Delivers

South Africa's manufacturing and services employers increasingly separate teams that design around the customer from those that design around assumptions. QFD is the method that puts you on the right side of that line. Here is the shift the training delivers.

    Today

One of many engineers without a standout design method

    After QFD

A go-to QFD facilitator for customer-driven product and quality teams

    Today

Limited to delivery, with little say in what gets designed

    After QFD

Shaping engineering targets from real customer priorities

    Today

Valuable quality skills that employers cannot yet see on paper

    After QFD

Applied QFD capability sought across automotive, FMCG and pharma

    You master QFD

    Before

Design choices driven by opinion and internal assumptions

    Now you have

Design choices anchored to a structured, traceable Voice of the Customer

    Before

Customer needs lost in the handover from marketing to engineering

    Now you have

A House of Quality that keeps requirements visible from concept to production

    Before

Design conflicts discovered late in expensive prototypes

    Now you have

Design trade-offs surfaced early through the correlation roof

    Before

QFD talked about, but never actually run on a real product

    Now you have

The confidence to facilitate a full House of Quality yourself

"The difference between a product customers tolerate and one they choose is how well their needs were translated into the design. QFD is how good teams make that translation."

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured, customer-driven method for translating the Voice of the Customer into specific engineering and design characteristics. Its main tool, the House of Quality, links what customers want to how a product or service delivers it, so teams design quality in from the start.

    General

What is Quality Function Deployment (QFD)?

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured, customer-driven method for translating the Voice of the Customer into specific engineering and design characteristics. Its main tool, the House of Quality, links what customers want to how a product or service delivers it, so teams design quality in from the start.

Who should attend QFD training in South Africa?

The training suits product designers, design and quality engineers, product and R&D managers, marketing professionals and Six Sigma practitioners. It fits anyone in South Africa's automotive, FMCG, pharmaceutical or services sectors who needs to turn customer needs into design specifications.

Is QFD training worth it for product and quality professionals?

Yes. QFD gives you a practical, widely used method to reduce design iterations, cut rework and design products customers actually want. These skills are valued across South Africa's manufacturing and services employers, from vehicle makers to FMCG and pharmaceutical companies.

Do I need prior experience to take the course?

No. The course has no prerequisites and introduces QFD and the House of Quality from first principles. Familiarity with product development or quality management is helpful but not required, so beginners and experienced practitioners can both benefit.
