What is Quality Function Deployment (QFD)?

Do I need prior experience to take this course?

No. The course has no formal prerequisites and introduces QFD and the House of Quality from first principles. Familiarity with product development or quality management is helpful but not required.

Was QFD developed by a specific organisation?

QFD was developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno, with its first formal application at Mitsubishi's Kobe Shipyard in 1972. It is a vendor-neutral methodology with no single governing body.

Assessment

Is there an exam for the QFD training?

No. Quality Function Deployment training is a non-certification course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on House of Quality exercises, case studies and team discussion during the programme.

Do I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes. You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. No formal credential is awarded by an external body, as QFD is a vendor-neutral skills methodology rather than a certification.

How is my learning assessed?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you build and interpret real House of Quality matrices through practical exercises, so you leave able to apply QFD to your own products or services.

Is this training governed by a certifying body?

No single body governs QFD. The course is grounded in the established QFD methodology and the House of Quality, and is delivered by Invensis Learning, an ISO 9001:2015 certified training provider.

Will these QFD skills expire or need renewal?

No. The skills you learn do not expire and require no renewal. QFD and House of Quality techniques are immediately applicable to product development, service design and quality planning.

Course Content

What topics does the QFD course cover?

The programme covers QFD principles and the business case, Voice of the Customer capture, building and interpreting the House of Quality, four-phase QFD cascading, and QFD in Design for Six Sigma, DMAIC and service design.

What is the House of Quality?

The House of Quality is the central QFD planning matrix. It links customer requirements to measurable engineering characteristics, captures trade-offs in its correlation roof, benchmarks competitors and sets engineering targets.

Are there hands-on exercises?

Yes. You structure the Voice of the Customer with affinity diagrams and the Kano model, build a full House of Quality from a realistic scenario, calculate column importance and identify design hot spots.

How long is the QFD training?

The course is delivered in one day (eight hours), covering all six QFD modules from Voice of the Customer through to production planning, with practical House of Quality exercises throughout.

Does QFD apply to services as well as products?

Yes. While QFD began in manufacturing, the course covers its use in services such as healthcare and financial services, and in software, wherever customer requirements must become design or delivery specifications.
