What Is Value Stream Mapping Training?UntitledA Practical Lean Improvement Skill

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) Training is a practical, one-day Lean course that teaches you to visualise the full flow of materials and information needed to deliver a product or service, then redesign that flow to remove waste. Rooted in the Toyota Production System and popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998), VSM remains one of the most trusted diagnostic tools in Lean management. Across the day you learn to draw current-state and future-state value stream maps, calculate takt time and lead time, and reveal the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME) hidden inside everyday processes. This is a non-certification skills programme: there is no exam, and you leave with a course completion record from Invensis Learning plus maps you can apply immediately. For professionals across UK manufacturing, healthcare, logistics and services, VSM turns process frustration into a clear, prioritised improvement plan that connects daily work to real operational results.

What Is Driving Demand for Lean Improvement in the UK

    Skills Gaps Eroding Productivity

With 78% of UK manufacturers reporting productivity loss from skills gaps, firefighting crowds out improvement. VSM gives teams a fast, visual way to find and cut waste.

VSM helps stretched teams see and remove waste

    An Ageing Engineering Workforce

Around a fifth of the engineering workforce is set to retire, thinning the pool of people who can lead change. VSM helps organisations grow that capability internally.

    VSM builds improvement capability in-house

    Stretched Order Books, Tight Margins

Order books reach into 2026 while energy and input costs squeeze margins. Mapping the value stream exposes bottlenecks and lead-time waste that unlock hidden capacity.

VSM frees capacity without new headcount

    Stalled Continuous Improvement

When teams operate without support, improvement initiatives stall and rework creeps up. VSM restarts continuous improvement with a prioritised, agreed future state.

VSM restarts CI with a clear future-state plan

    Automation Outpacing Process Clarity

UK firms are investing in automation and AI but struggle to scale it. A value stream map shows where technology will actually remove waste, not simply digitise it.

VSM shows where technology truly reduces waste

Pressure to Do More with Less

Across NHS services, logistics and food production, leaders must lift throughput with constrained labour. VSM makes end-to-end flow a picture teams can improve together.

VSM turns end-to-end flow into shared improvement

The VSM Skills You Will BuildMapping, Analysis and Implementation

This programme takes you through the full VSM process in a single day: from Lean foundations and standard symbols to current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning, with hands-on mapping exercises throughout.

    Map the Full Value Stream

In Value Stream Mapping training you learn to draw a current-state map using standard VSM symbols, capturing cycle time, changeover time, uptime and inventory from a real Gemba walk of the process.

    Separate Value from Waste

Distinguish value-added, non-value-added and necessary non-value-added activity, and reveal the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME) hidden across the flow so you know exactly what to target.

Analyse Flow and Find the Bottleneck

Calculate takt time, total lead time and the value-added ratio, then locate the constraint that limits output and understand why improving non-bottleneck steps rarely lifts overall performance.

    Design a Leaner Future State

Apply the eight future-state questions to build continuous flow, pull systems and supermarkets, level scheduling, and mark Kaizen bursts where the biggest improvements will be made.

    Build an Implementation Roadmap

Turn the future-state map into a sequenced plan of Kaizen events, with owners, target metrics and milestones, so the vision becomes a set of manageable, trackable improvement projects.

    Sustain the Improvement

Standardise new ways of working, embed them in daily management, and set a regular value stream review cadence so gains hold and continuous improvement becomes part of how the team operates.

"We booked this for our operations and quality teams and mapped one of our own value streams in the room. It gave everyone a shared language for improvement and a prioritised roadmap we are still working through. Strong return on a single day."

Yes. Value Stream Mapping is a practical Lean skill that UK employers actively need as they tackle productivity and skills gaps. You leave able to map, analyse and improve real processes, which supports roles in continuous improvement, operational excellence and operations management.

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for visualising the full flow of materials and information needed to deliver a product or service. Rooted in the Toyota Production System, it is used to reveal waste, bottlenecks and improvement opportunities across an end-to-end process.

The programme suits operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, Lean practitioners, supply chain and logistics managers, healthcare improvement leads, and Six Sigma practitioners. It is open to anyone responsible for finding and removing waste in end-to-end process flows.

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste, flow and pull is helpful, but the course introduces every concept it uses, so beginners and experienced practitioners can both benefit.

The programme runs for one day, around 8 hours, and can also be delivered as two half-days. It covers Lean foundations, VSM symbols, current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning, with hands-on mapping exercises throughout.

    General

Is Value Stream Mapping training worth it?

Yes. Value Stream Mapping is a practical Lean skill that UK employers actively need as they tackle productivity and skills gaps. You leave able to map, analyse and improve real processes, which supports roles in continuous improvement, operational excellence and operations management.

    What is Value Stream Mapping?

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for visualising the full flow of materials and information needed to deliver a product or service. Rooted in the Toyota Production System, it is used to reveal waste, bottlenecks and improvement opportunities across an end-to-end process.

    Who should attend this course?

The programme suits operations and manufacturing managers, process and industrial engineers, Lean practitioners, supply chain and logistics managers, healthcare improvement leads, and Six Sigma practitioners. It is open to anyone responsible for finding and removing waste in end-to-end process flows.

Do I need prior Lean experience?

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste, flow and pull is helpful, but the course introduces every concept it uses, so beginners and experienced practitioners can both benefit.

    How long is the training?

The programme runs for one day, around 8 hours, and can also be delivered as two half-days. It covers Lean foundations, VSM symbols, current-state mapping, analysis, future-state design and implementation planning, with hands-on mapping exercises throughout.

    Pricing

How much does Value Stream Mapping training cost in the UK?

Pricing varies by delivery mode, group size and format, so fees are provided on request. Your fee covers instructor-led training, courseware and hands-on mapping exercises. Contact a learning advisor for a quote, or ask about group and corporate pricing.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee typically includes instructor-led delivery, structured courseware, hands-on current-state and future-state mapping exercises, practical resources and learner support, plus a course completion record from Invensis Learning. There is no separate exam fee, as the course has no exam.

Do you offer group or corporate discounts?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with tailored schedules and volume-based pricing for operations, quality and engineering teams. Group delivery is especially effective because your team can map a real value stream together. Contact us for a tailored quote.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, and can arrange invoicing for corporate bookings. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you or your organisation.

Is there a fee for the completion record?

No. The course completion record from Invensis Learning is included in your training fee. It confirms you have completed the one-day Value Stream Mapping programme.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for this course?

No. Value Stream Mapping training is a non-certification skills course with no exam. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion, so you practise the technique on realistic scenarios during the day rather than sitting a test.

Do I receive a certificate or credential?

You receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning. No formal credential is awarded by an external body, because VSM is an established Lean technique with no governing certification. The value is the practical skill you can apply immediately.

    How is my learning assessed?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you build and analyse current-state and future-state maps through practical exercises and group activities, so you leave having actually applied the method rather than being scored on it.

Will I be able to run VSM at work afterwards?

Yes. By the end you can select a product family, walk the value stream, draw a current-state map, identify waste, design a future state and build an implementation plan. Many learners facilitate their first mapping workshop within weeks.

Does this course lead to a Lean Six Sigma qualification?

Not directly, but it is a strong foundation. VSM is a core tool within Lean Six Sigma, so this training complements Yellow Belt and Green Belt study and gives you focused depth on one of the most widely used improvement techniques.

    Course Content

What will I learn in the VSM syllabus?

You will learn Lean foundations and the eight wastes, standard VSM symbols, how to build a current-state map, how to analyse flow and find the bottleneck, how to design a future-state map, and how to create an implementation and Kaizen plan.

Does the course include hands-on practice?

Yes. Hands-on mapping is central to the day. You practise building both current-state and future-state maps for realistic operational scenarios, so you leave with genuine experience of the technique, not just theory.

    Does VSM apply outside manufacturing?

Absolutely. While VSM began on the shop floor, it is widely used in healthcare, logistics, financial services, IT and general service operations to map patient pathways, back-office processes and delivery pipelines and to remove waste from them.

    What key concepts are covered?

The course covers current and future-state maps, value-added versus non-value-added work, takt time, cycle time and lead time, push versus pull systems, inventory and WIP, the eight wastes (DOWNTIME) and the Kaizen burst, all applied through practical mapping.

    What materials are provided?

You receive structured courseware covering all six modules, the standard VSM symbol set, worked examples and practical mapping resources you can reuse in your own workplace. A course completion record is provided on finishing the programme.

    Enrollment

How soon can I start and how do I enrol?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website, then choose an upcoming public schedule or request a date for your team. Once enrolled you receive joining details, schedules and learning resources. Talk to an advisor to find the next available UK session.

    What delivery formats are available?

The training is available online (live virtual instructor-led), in classroom sessions, and as onsite or customised corporate delivery for teams. Choose the format that best fits your schedule and how your team prefers to learn.

Can you deliver this onsite for our team?

Yes. We regularly deliver VSM training onsite and live virtual for organisations across the UK. Onsite delivery lets your team map one of your own value streams together, which turns the day into immediate, practical improvement. Contact us to arrange a session.

    Can I reschedule my booking?
