All you need to know about the requirements for being a Project Management Professional

If you are planning to be a Project Management Professional (PMP), then you need a PMP certification to get started. There are some prerequisites for getting this certification and being eligible for the PMP exam. Read on to know all the requirements for a PMP certification.

What are the PMP Certification Requirements

The two primary PMP certification requirements are qualification and experience.

There are two prerequisites for the PMP certification, and you need to have at least one of them to be eligible for the PMP certification.

PMP Certification Requirement 1:

  • You need a secondary or associate degree along with 5 years (60 months) of Project Management experience. Of this, 7500 hours should be dedicated to leading and managing projects, and 35 contact hours are to be of project management education

This means that you need to participate in a project management environment for 5 years. The 7500 hours, which is approximately 3.5 years, should be spent in a leading role. A supervisor or junior team leader assisting a Project Manager is a qualified role for PMP course eligibility.

PMP Certification Requirement 2:

  • You need a four-year bachelor’s degree in IT, engineering, or an associated field and at least 3 years (36 months) of project management experience. Of this, 4500 hours should be dedicated to leading and managing projects, and 35 contact hours are to be of project management education.

If you have a four-year bachelor degree or above, then you only need three years of project management experience. Again, the 4500 hours required in a leading or directing role includes a supervisor or junior team leader role assisting a Project Manager.

As for the 35 hours of Project Management education, you can enrol for PMP certification training.
