A Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification will add value to your career, even if the cost seems to be a little steep at first look. Before you consider doing a CAPM certification, you should know about the different cost components involved.

CAPM Certification Cost Components

Professional certifications are important for career growth. Let us look at the components involved in getting a CAPM certification:

Cost #1: Examination Fee

The examination fee is a mandatory fee that you must pay online directly to PMI. If you are a PMI member, you pay $225 for the examination. If you are not a PMI member, you pay $300.

The annual membership fee for PMI is $129.

Cost #2: Re-Examination Fee

You get three attempts in a single year to pass the CAPM exam. The fee for the second and third attempts for members and non-members is $150 and $200.

Cost #3: Recertification Fee

The CAPM certification has a validity period of five years. You can choose to renew the certification before it expires, or afterward. The recertification fee for members and non-members is $150 and $200 if you renew the certificate before it expires.

Cost #4: Renewal Fee

If you do not renew your certification within five years, the certification process starts as a fresh process for you. In that case, the fee becomes $225 for members and $225 for non-members.

Cost #5:PMBOK®Guide - Sixth Edition

The PMBOK®Guide - Sixth Edition is available as a free download for PMI members, but it is not printable. Both members and non-members can buy a printed copy from or Amazon for $49.5 or $99.

Cost #6: Reference Books

It will cost you about $50 to buy a good reference book. You can check the prices online.

Cost #7: CAPM Training Cost

It may or may not be necessary for you to take 23 hours of formal training before the certification examination. The CAPM course fees are between $150 - $250.

Cost #8: Simulation Test Cost

If you want to take some practice questions before you appear for the actual exam, a good simulation test will be about $50 - $100.

Cost #9: Other Study Material

It will cost about $50 - $100 for any extra study material that you buy for better exam preparation.

The other option is to appear for the CAPM certification after five years, but this will be a fresh process.

The PMI membership is not mandatory, but you get certain benefits if you obtain membership. The certification examination is available to you at a reduced fee, and you are also able to download a soft copy of the PMBOK®Guide - Sixth Edition for free.
