You can take the PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner examination in either of the following ways:

  • Through Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) who include the exam as part of the PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner training course.
  • Online or,
  • At a public PRINCE2 examination centre.

PRINCE2 Foundation Examination

The PRINCE2 Foundation examination evaluates if the candidate can act as an informed member of a project management team making use of the PRINCE2 method within a project environment that supports PRINCE2.

PRINCE2 Foundation Exam Format

The format of the PRINCE2 Foundation examination is as follows:

  • The exam duration is of 60 minutes.
  • There are 60 questions in total
  • The examination is a closed book exam.
  • The examination pass mark is 55%, that is you must get 33 answers correct out of the 60 questions.

PRINCE2 Practitioner Examination

The PRINCE2 Practitioner examination evaluates if the candidate can apply PRINCE2 concepts to the management and running of a simple project, in an environment that supports PRINCE2.

PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam Format

The format of the PRINCE2 Practitioner examination is as follows:

  • The exam duration is of 150 minutes.
  • There are 68 questions in total.
  • The examination is an open book examination, but you can use the official PRINCE2 manual only.
  • The PRINCE2 practitioner pass mark is 55%, that is you must get 38 out of the 68 questions correct.

PRINCE2 Foundation: There is no formal prerequisite for the PRINCE2 foundation examination, but aspiring candidates should have a basic understanding of Project Management.

PRINCE2 Practitioner: You must have proof of having passed any one of the following before you can take the PRINCE2 Practitioner examination:

    • PRINCE2 Foundation
    • Project Management Professional (PMP)
    • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
    • IPMA Level A (Certified Projects Director)
    • IPMA Level B (Certified Senior Project Manager)
    • IPMA Level C (Certified Project Manager)
    • IPMA Level D (Certified Project Management Associate)

You can sit for the PRINCE2 examinations at any accredited training company. If you are in the United Kingdom, you can take the examinations at open exam centers in London, Chester, York, and Milton Keynes. If you live in any other country, it is usually possible to take them in an office of the British Council. There may be a waiting list for the examination, and the examinations happen only on certain days and places, so plan in advance.

The other option is to sit for the PRINCE2 examinations using a remote web proctor solution in which you can attempt the exam online with a microphone, webcam, and a good Internet connection. You can schedule the exam ahead of time, at a date and time of your choosing. You can connect to a proctor at the agreed time for live invigilation.

You must successfully complete the PRINCE2 Foundation examination or any of the other prerequisites for the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam, to become eligible for taking the Practitioner exam.
