What is the format of the PfMP exam?

The PfMP exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice examination based on the PfMP Examination Content Outline and the Standard for Portfolio Management, Fourth Edition. It uses scenario-based questions across five performance domains and is delivered by Pearson VUE.

How many questions are on the PfMP exam and how long is it?

The PfMP exam has 170 questions and an allotted time of four hours. The five domains are Strategic Alignment, Governance, Portfolio Performance, Portfolio Risk Management and Communications Management.

What is the passing score for the PfMP exam?

PMI does not publish a fixed percentage pass mark. Results are determined through psychometric analysis and reported as Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement by domain, so aim for broad mastery across all five domains.

What if I do not pass the PfMP exam the first time?

PMI allows up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period. Reexamination fees apply to the second and third attempts, and our prep resources and mock exams are built to help you pass with confidence.

What is the PfMP panel review?

The panel review is a multi-rater assessment unique to PfMP. A panel of portfolio management practitioners evaluates your documented experience and competency. You must pass both the panel review and the written exam to earn the credential.

Which standard is the PfMP exam based on?

The exam is based on the current PfMP Examination Content Outline, aligned to the Standard for Portfolio Management, 4th Edition, from PMI. Our courseware maps directly to these five performance domains and their tasks.

Can someone newer to portfolio management take this training?

Anyone can attend the training to build knowledge and earn contact hours. To sit the exam, PMI requires substantial portfolio management experience, so the course also guides you on documenting your experience for the application and panel review.

You receive PMI-aligned courseware, references to the PfMP Examination Content Outline and Handbook, an overview of the Standard for Portfolio Management, templates, flashcards and chapter-wise quizzes.

PMI requires one of three sets: a secondary diploma with 84 months of portfolio management experience, or a bachelor's degree with 48 months (36 months from a GAC-accredited program), plus 120 months of business experience within the last 15 years and a panel review.
