The United States Army War College was one of the first organizations to use the VUCA acronym since the 2001 9/11 terrorist attacks. Military planners were concerned about the fundamentally new and unfamiliar international security climate that arose, so they used VUCA to characterize it. VUCA stands for: 

  • Volatile – the essence and degree of change are rapid and unpredictable 
  • Uncertain – the present is unknown and the future is uncertain
  • Complex – a lot of different, intertwined variables come into play, with the ability to create chaos and uncertainty
  • Ambiguous – there is a lack of understanding or knowledge of circumstances

With this degree of stress faced by leaders and staff, it is no wonder that there is a rising awareness of the connection between mental health and the workplace. In the United Kingdom, 15.8 million working days were lost due to mental health concerns in 2016, and according to ONS, 2/3 of the staff claimed that their employer should do more to reduce stress at the workplace. One of the factors that cause the pressure is the way we work today: we’re all linked and constantly turned on, which means that the brain never gets off the treadmill.

And every time we get disrupted, either in a physical or a digital world, it takes energy to get back to our attention. Eventually, we’re going to run out of resources because the human brain isn’t an infinite resource. Much as our body’s muscles get exhausted after much shorter, very hard workouts, so does our brain.
