Why Vacation is Important for IT Professionals

Hectic work life and extreme pressure makes employees demotivated, stressed, and unhappy with their job. The main purpose of a vacation is to rejuvenate them and make them focused and more productive in their workplace.

The digital era has not only brought us closer to each other, but it also keeps us constantly connected with our workplace. Office mails, client calls, and Skype conversations ensure that we are always working even when we have an off day. But over time, employees tend to feel stressed and unhappy at their workplace due to this constant stress. It is worth noting that while more than 80% of the employee workforce has access to significant vacation time, less than 20% utilize it thoroughly.

According to statistics by the 2018 Vacation Deprivation report released on the Expedia portal, 75% of Indian employees are deprived of vacation time, and most of them don't get to avail their unused vacation days due to pressure in their workplace. More than 25% of such employees state the fear of being termed as less committed as one of the prime reasons for not availing their vacation. There is also this preconceived notion that successful people don't get to take vacations, which more than 19% of Indian employees believe in.

However, it is incredibly crucial that employees take some time off from their busy schedules and give themselves a break. While there is no real escape from stress at work, and they have to get back to their schedule ultimately, these small breaks help them boost their productivity and positively impact their overall efficiency.

Benefit of Vacations

Your body is programmed to handle a certain amount of stress every day. When an employee exceeds the limit, they tend to feel exhausted and emotionally drained. This is where the vacation helps. The body gets the needed time to bounce back from the everyday work pressure and recover from chronic stress. Employees then feel more rejuvenated and recharged, making them more efficient at their work.

  1. Relieves Stress and Improves Productivity

This is one of the most significant advantages of vacation for employees. Employees who take a break now and then tend to be more refreshed and inclined to take up extra work. It has also been observed that such employees tend to be more efficient and content with their job. This is because of the elimination of stress. An employee who takes a regular break from work tends to be happier at work and more productive and efficient.

  2. Minimizes the Risk of Heart Disease and Other Ailment

Stress is one of the significant contributors to a plethora of health ailments. It tends to alter the overall immune system of the body, making people prone to health ailments. People who are stressed fall prey to a host of diseases and are often down both mentally and physically. It has been observed that people who go on regular vacations have a lesser risk of metabolic syndrome. These are the set of risk factors that contribute to cardiovascular diseases in the longer run. Vacation also improves the overall blood pressure levels and mental health of the employees. Vacationing ensures that employees have a healthy body and heart.

  3. Improves Overall Concentration and Focus

When employees take some personal time away from work, they tend to feel recharged and relaxed. They are thus more receptive towards work and show more focus. A calm and relaxed mind is better at decision making and can do more work in a shorter time. According to research, more than 70% of the employees who took regular vacations felt more equipped and ready to handle the mundane stress that comes with their job.

  4. Helps Bond with Loved Ones

Due to the constant work pressure and extended work hours, it becomes physically impossible to spend quality time with your family and loved ones. This leads to them drifting apart over time and weakening of family ties. Vacations are the means of strengthening the family bond and bringing everyone together. It also builds mutual respect and love towards each other and also make wonderful memories together.

  5. Improves Sleep Quality

When a person is on vacation, they are more likely to get 8-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep. This elimination of pressure from their everyday routine and improves the overall sleep quality by more than 30-40%. Less caffeine, more leisure activity, fresh air, great ambience, and the company of your loved ones are the most potent combinations one could fathom for good sleep quality. Vacations are our only chance of rebooting our health and improving our overall work-life balance.

In Conclusion

There are umpteen benefits of taking a vacation. It keeps you healthy, stress-free, and mentally sound, thus improving your overall productivity and job satisfaction. So, the next time you feel stressed, low or disconnected from your work, do yourself a favour and go on a vacation.
