The Program Management Professional (PgMP) is PMI's senior credential for professionals who manage multiple related projects as a coordinated program to deliver strategic benefits. Is PMP required before PgMP?

No, PMP is not a mandatory prerequisite. However, an active PMP satisfies the project management experience requirement across all three PgMP eligibility sets, so PMP holders only need to document their program management experience.

What is the PgMP panel review?

The panel review is a multi-rater assessment unique to the PgMP. A panel of program management practitioners evaluates your documented experience and competency. It is a mandatory step in addition to the written exam, and both must be passed to earn the credential.

How long is the PgMP certification valid?

The PgMP is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 PDUs across the PMI Talent Triangle, with a minimum of 8 PDUs in each area, within every three-year continuing certification requirements (CCR) cycle.

What is the format of the PgMP exam?

The PgMP exam is closed book with multiple-choice questions based on the PgMP Examination Content Outline and The Standard for Program Management, Fourth Edition. It is delivered via Pearson VUE OnVUE online proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test center.

How many questions are on the PgMP exam and how long is it?

The exam has 170 questions and an allotted time of four hours. Results are reported with domain-level feedback of Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement rather than a fixed percentage.

What are the PgMP exam domains and weights?

Five performance domains: Strategic Program Management (11%), Program Life Cycle Management (44%), Benefits Management (11%), Stakeholder Engagement (16%) and Governance (18%). Program Life Cycle Management carries the most weight.

What are the eligibility requirements for the PgMP?

You must meet one of three sets: a secondary diploma with 48 months of project management experience or an active PMP plus 84 months of program experience; a bachelor's degree with the same PM requirement plus 48 months of program experience; or a GAC-accredited degree with reduced 36-month thresholds. All experience must fall within the past 15 years.

What happens if I do not pass the first time?

PMI allows up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility window from application approval. Reexamination fees apply to later attempts. Our mock exams, domain practice and instructor support are designed to build readiness before your first sitting.
